Happs Super - Unresponsive
« on: September 26, 2006, 11:39:59 pm »
I'm having trouble with a Happs Super joy that I just mounted on my new cab.  The stick seems a bit unresponsive.  When I pull up notepad to test I log only about 2/3 of the keypresses.   It is running through an ipac through USB.

All the buttons that I've hooked up are working perfectly and everypress is registered in notepad and mame.  I can hear the switches clicking and I know I have the stick setup correctly.  I have double checked all the wiring and everything seems fine.

I am pretty much at a loss as to what could be going wrong.  On my last cab I installed 4 supers and they all worked perfectly.

Could this possibly be a USB issue?  On my last cab I didn't do usb..but unfortunately I don't have a cable to test the standard ps2 port.

Please help.

I would try swapping out the microswitches with the buttons that you know work everytime.  If they stop working, then it's probably a wiring issue.  If they do work, then you can just get some new microswitches.

I was thinking about doing this but I didn't think there was a high chance that all the switches were bad.

Maybe I'll try 1 for now and report back.  I have a bunch of extra switches.

I just ran the ipac test utility with similar results.

Okay...

Instead of outright replacing the switch I just unscrewed it from the stick.  I then  pressed in the switch as fast as I could and every single press was picked up by the software.

So it seems as if something is wrong with the way I have installed the stick.  I'm pretty sure I have it correct with the big part of the 8 way actuator pointing up.

Any suggestions?

the panel through hole is either too small or your panel is too thick thus restricting the movement of your stick

I cut 1 1/8" holes and centered the stick perfectly.  The panel is only 1/2" + 1/8" plexi.

I'll have to double check to make sure it isn't catching on something as I am at work right now.

Sounds like you definitely narrowed it down to a mechanical issue then.  Can you lift the dust washer and see if the shaft is hitting against the wood/plexi while moving the stick around?  Also, have you examined the Super parts diagram from Happs to make sure all the stick parts are assembled correctly?

Easiest thing to do would be remove the stick from the panel. If it works when not mounted then the problem is that it's binding on the panel. If it doesn't then something isn't assembled correctly.

make sure you've installed the rubber things on the bottom of the stick correctly, if they are on upside down, they function as a 4 way stick
