Buying a jamma cabinet soon i need help before i buy it though.
« on: September 25, 2006, 09:35:23 pm »
ok this is my first post here and my first time thinking of buying a jamma cabinet so please bare with me if i sound dumb when it comes to the mechanics of a jamma cabinet..

i know a guy who wants to sell me the following for $200..

jamma cabinet with 2 joysticks and 4 action buttons and 2 player start buttons with a coinmech..

now here is what i dont get for $200....

monitor
power supply
backdoor for cabinet

what i need to know is do i have to *have* a powersupply to work the jamma buttons and joysticks.

because i am thinking of buying a j-pac to throw in their and hook up my pc to the cabinet and use the s-video out on my tv as the monitor..

will this work and is having a power supply in a mame machine a necessity to have working jamma buttons and coin mechs or does it get all the power from the PC and or the J-PAC??

please help me if you know these answers..

thanks!!

If you are going to make it a Mame cab then $200.00 for an empty cab a couple of joysticks and a few buttons sounds a bit expensive. You could probably find an empty cab somewhere for $50.00 to $75.00, maybe even cheaper (empty Tempest cab near my home for $20.00). Then build your own custom control panel.
And you don't need a power supply to use the controls with a pc.

I'm not sure what the going rate is, but I got my Jamma cabinet off of eBay for $75.  It did have the back door on the cabinet, plus the Jamma board and ps, coin mechs and doors, and two extra control panel blanks.  The only downside of my cab is that it originally housed a single player game so it's more narrow than I'd like.

Where are you? ie $200 in Australia is a bit $$$ but almost reasonable. I would pay $100 to $200 if the cab is solid.... no water damage etc.

In the US it seems there are a lot of cabs so its way expensive.

If u r in canada ....i don't know

Where else take $? :dunno
um  Hong Kong, buy it
Singapore...... bargain

Oh yeah... i bought a cab (150 btw) with no working monitor (although i didnt know this) and a working cab for $500 with 4 player 3 buttons and power supply and pcb 100% working...  I blew up the P/S trying it on the $150 cab (bloody cabs with bloody 110V)  So i bought a new P/S --BINGO! Either that, or I was attempting to say "before" but it was too many letters to type-- i found out i DONT need one to use Jpac or Ipac   both of which i recommend for newbies (as I am one)

Just to throw more fuel on the fire, I bought this in 2004 at an amusement auction for $266.52 after taxes and fees.

Fully working Capcom CPS2 Gigawing arcade game (conversion)
25" arcade monitor in good condition
oversized 4 player control panel (converted to 2 player)
4 player coin door (an expensive item by itself)

Some people have even told me that I paid too much but I'm totally happy with what I spent.

Let see, two used joysticks: $3 each = $6
10 used buttons: $0.50 ea = $5
Used coin mech = $3
Total in parts: $14.
$200 - $14 = $186 for a wood box. And a used one at that.

NO MORE!!

Nope, you don't need the power supply, but $200 for a mostly stripped cab is high ... where are you located ?

Cheers.

I'd pay about $50 for that.

Those prices aren't out of line for used stuff that nobody wanted to bother stripping from the cabinet.

Let's see ... I bought a box of about 150 leaf buttons and switches for $0.99 plus $8 shipping from eBay. Then, 20 mechs for $25 shipped from a seller here.

I have never bought a used joystick that wasn't either attached to a cab or a specialty stick (rotaries, Galaga, Joust, Tron), but cheap 8-ways can be had new for $7-10, so $3 ain't a stretch.

Cheers.

I'll just echo everyone here... $200 is pricey for that cab.   If it had a working monitor, I'd say it's likely worth it, but for just an empty cab with a few controls.... nah.

You'll probably wind up buying new controls anyway unless the ones on it are in great shape, so you're really only buying a box.   Find a cheaper cab.
first off your and idiot

Man I love the internet, haha.
