Trackballs! ?
« on: September 20, 2006, 03:30:39 pm »
Hey folks,

Finalizing the plans for my CP. . . . Trying to decide what I am doing for a Trackball.  I've purchased a Opti-pac from Ultimarc.  It is on its way 'cross the pond now. . . I love the looks of the Happ trackballs, but I absolutely don't like the price. . . .  I like the price on the Ultimarc Trackballs much better.

I have 2 questions in regards to this:

1) Is the 2 1/4" ball going to be a large downgrade from the 3" ball?  I really am only going to use the Trackball to navigate my FE. . . I don't forsee myself playing alot of Trackball games.

2) I've done some research and it appears that the Ultimarc TB is actually the Wico TB. . . Is this a large quality downgrade from the Happ TB's? Is this downgrade important, considering I am only planning on using the TB to navigate my FE?

I have no experiance with TB's at all, and I know you all will give me honest opinions.  I apperciate the help!

Or just PM me, I have a spare slightly used HAPP 3" Blue translucent trackball.

I'll let it go for...well, maybe some sort of trade.

Let me know.

1) For that use I see no problem, the 2 1/4" is large enough for that.
2) No it's not a Wico, it's a Suzo. Maybe Wico also sold this one (when they still existed) but they bought it from Suzo. Some people here claim the Happ's are better than the Suzo. I am not that sure about that. Suzo makes excellent quality joysticks, so I wonder why the trackball would be bad quality. In any case for your goal it will already be much better than needed.

I've got one here (that still needs to be mouned in my CP) and I AM planning on playing games with it (Marble Madness, Missile Command) and I expect it to work fine.

[Edit] And think about it.....is Andy the type of guy to sell bad quality products......no way !)

You'd probably only notice the difference (much) with the 3" ball on games that use large trackball movements like golf or bowling games.  For plain old navigation and the occasional game of, say, Centipede, you could even get away with a quality PC trackball like a Kensington ExpertMouse.  (Cheap trackballs like those $6 blue transparent ones on eBay will wear out in a heartbeat.)
