Right now there appears to be no way to ignore a troll.  There's a mod to add such a function at http://mods.simplemachines.org/index.php?mod=185 ... might be worth looking into.

I second this.  Not that it's a democracy or anything, but FWIW.

edit, that sounded pissy, not the way I meant it.

Gonna ask SirWoogie to take a look - it does not appear to be compatible with our version of SMF however... :(

What was the verdict on this?  If this is what caused mission and PDB to be unable to log in, could you please try it again ;D

A very long time ago I would have blocked DK and it would have been very much to my own detriment both in terms of fun and genuine arcade info.  People need to be careful with this idea.  There will also be responses, even to a genuine troll, that will require that you read the other post.  You know what I'm getting at.  In most cases a manual ignore might be the best one.

Is this the reason for the increase of new usernames going to P&R?

I too would love this feature, theres one user who pisses me off with just about every post they make forcing me to restrain myself from starting a flame war every time I come across one of their posts (no, its no one whos posted in here or even in P&R).  I'm generally able to just ignore their comments, but would love to be able to have them automatically ignored so that its not even an issue.

WHY MUST YOU ALWAYS HARASS ME!!!

Just to be clear, that was a joke. The only problem I have with missioncontrol is his refusal to shower  ;D  I don't think the person who does bug me even checks this section of the forum and I'm pretty sure they know I don't like them anyways.

I just want to be able to block the people who troll here so I stop myself from helping them.  It's my weak self-restraint or something ;D

I get what you're saying, but some folks just let people eat at them and drive them nuts.  I think a better idea would be to give the ability to block certain forums.  The ability to even SEE the words "Politics n Religion" seem to be too much to handle, and I'd say a large number of the people who post in there understand the purpose for the forum, but others let the views those people post in there cloud their perspective of the person as a whole (I understand that I'm one of those, as well as my counterpart, Dexter ;D ).

For others, the ability to block out the forum of a "competitor" product is a step they SHOULD take ;D

Well I don't know much as most of you have probably figured by now. I stay away from the forum P&R. I'm scared to even go in there for some reason. I get enough of that on CNN. I don't even want to have my own opinion on that stuff cause I don't think I'm smart enough and it would probably take up too much of OUR time.

AS far as the rest of ya's, or whoever mentioned it, I could see where you would want DK on auto censor or block or whatever. Course I'm just a noob still trying to find my way around this place...trying to figure out if I belong here or not. What do you get when you mix 10,000 wackos all in the same chat room? C-H-A-O-S. I'm addicted to it.

Most of the people I would "ignore" rarely (if ever) contribute anything arcade related anyway.

Would be interested in an ignore filter too. Especially on some forums some people seem to lose all restraint.

On the other hand you probably see the trolling you're trying to ignore back in the quotes in replies anyway.

I think you misjudge our capacity for apathy.  It was caught long before Chad, but when you realize who posted it....well, that's just like picking on the "special" kid after you just got your butt kicked by someone tougher than you.  Sure, it makes you feel better for a second or two, but in the end, it's just a hollow victory that was a given from the outset ;D

You can't miss the "special" kid.  He spells like he's 2, wears a helmet even when he's NOT tumbling down hills in his Bronco or hatching some plot to rule the world while riding his lawnmower and drinking beer......man, if you don't know who the "special" kid is here, I can't go and ruin it for ya, you've gotta EXPERIENCE that guy!

Hopefully Saint's forum "fix" worked this time, otherwise he'll be along to post sooner or later ;D

Attempting to post.... Ah, good, I must not be the "special" guy... or Saint's "fix" didn't work....

Damn,  now I'll never know.

Hey Drew,

since everyone is at a loss on who the special kid is, perhaps you can bribe Saint to change the " official BYOAC surfer" to "the "special" kid" in his title to eliminate the confussion   ;D

Don't feel left out, some of us think you're almost as special as he is.  He was here first, though, so you'll have to have a little patience with the rest of us.  One special kid is easy to manage, two or more present a much larger challenge.  We'll get to you soon enough.

I just can't understand why you all would feel the need to globally block somebody.  So Dartful lacks any capacity to say something funny yet says the same not-funny thing over and over for years on end in a futile attempt to finally make it work.  So Chad argues every point compulsively, sometimes going so far as to abandon the position expressed in his previous post, just so he can continue arguing if you happen to agree with him.  So Drew is a religious zealot with a tendency to derive his world view from extremist websites.  So Howard's a pompous ass.  So Dexter's raison d'etre is to hate America.  So Mr. C has responds like a dos prompt to button pressing.  So Fredster's arguments always consist of either wild leaps of incomprehensible logic or mind-boggling oversimplifications.  So Chrirs is scared of his own shadow.  So I'm a bloody narcissistic know-it-all (by the way, that's the figurative/pejorative know-it-all, not the literal kind).

So ---smurfing--- what.  Some people just want to scrub their world clean and it makes no sense to me.  Ya know, Drew, when you talk to your wife about something someone said on the arcade message board, do you talk about what Fredster says, or do you talk about what Dexter says?  AtomSmasher, when Howard pisses you off and you post a rant back at him, think about how much more clearly and articulately you know how you feel about the issue afterward.

Part of what makes life interesting are the people who are different than us.  Part of what makes life interesting are the people we don't like.

And, anyway, don't ya think it'll get kind of old when you start reading posts that make absolutely no sense because they are responding to, or building off of a previous post that you can't see because of your ignore settings?

If that post took you longer than 2 minutes (hell, ONE minute) to read, you need Hooked On Phonics

Ya know, Drew, when you talk to your wife about something someone said on the arcade message board, do you talk about what Fredster says, or do you talk about what Dexter says?

Is this just part of you trying to make a point and feeling like you have to use SOMEONE as an example, or haven't you read this thread.....and comprehended what was said?  If it's the latter, Chad's rubbing off on you.

It is this.  My point isn't that you want to globally ignore a bunch of people.  I just picked two people who are diametrically opposed to eachother and argue a lot on the board.  It could have just as easily have been Mr. C and Dartful.  Whatever.  I'm just illustrating that sometimes the people who cause conflict are also the ones that make life interesting for us, and you and Dexter are two people who have a lot of conflict and are active enough that everybody knows what I'm talking about.

p.s. Sorry Saint.  You've gotta stop being so balanced and reasonable if you want to hang with the PnR boys    :P

What's this all about? If you want to ignore i would suggest not logging on.

Maybe we all can have conversations with ourselves posting one on top of the other of our own threads without any interaction at all.

I think some of you are taking things way too personal if you're going to the length of blocking a person. It's the intranet, deal with it. To me blocking defeats the whole reason to be on here talking to people.

If there is a particular user that happens to lower your enjoyment of the board, I think you should be able to block them.  I also think that if a certain number of people block a user, that user should be banned.

I think before you consider censoring people or allowing others to censor,  you may want to consider removing the forums causing the most "issues".   Namely the Political discussions forum.   I find myself oddly attracted to the utter and complete mess that is posted in that forum...but it's a source of frustration....a source of frustration I just can't let loose of.

This forum should be all about FUN,  but once a person starts posting in the Politics forum,  what is said there gets "used" all over the forum by people who disagree with the posters politics.

Is it really necessary to have that type of forum on this type of website?   I mean,  there are a boat load of political forums you can go participate in if you wanted to...not sure if it's necessary here...

But while it's here I can't help myself from going in and participating in that train wreck.

PnR protects the rest of the board from that stuff.  Without PnR, it just goes into EE.

BTW, there should never be a mechanism for a group of users to be able to ban another user.  Never.

They shouldn't have the power to ban either.  Suspend, yes, but only the owner should have the right to ban.

When do people "use" things outside of P&R.  I don't read everthing but I can say I have ever seen this, personally.

Is it really necessary to have that type of forum on this type of website?   I mean,  there are a boat load of political forums you can go participate in if you wanted to...not sure if it's necessary here...

But while it's here I can't help myself from going in and participating in that train wreck.

So everyone who wants to participate shouldn't be able to because some people don't have the will power to stay away?

Could we make it subscription based so that even if your logged in, you won't see it unless you subscribe to it?  Would that keep you away?

Don't we have an internal "Global Ignore" when we just freaking SKIP the post?

It's not like their are kids reading it. And it's not like a adult can't just skip to the next guy if they don't wanna watch.  What happens when somebody quotes from the "global" ignore?

If you don't wanna do PnR, then don't CLICK it.  If you don't like a guy who posts, ignore them on your own.  Just like if you don't wanna watch a chanel, CHANGE IT.

It works well on Digg.  If enough users (some obscenely high number) add a user to their personal block list, they get blocked.  It works well if you set the number high enough, as it weeds out only the most annoying of the annoyers.

The forum has become self-aware. Massive post nukes are next as MAMEnet takes over and destroys all humans arcade collections.

The question is - whose awareness is it?  Could you imagine a self aware forum made up of MaximRecoil's posts?  Or tommy's?  Or god forbid mine?

I did, but it will not install here. Don't know why. Fails every single time. :(

Did it kick you an error like it was corrupt? If so, I can help. I had this problem at first too

If you get a warning like "I'm afraid I can't let you do that Dave" then you better stop messing with it.

Thanks Goz - it's doing something weird and timing out on any mod install, but after the first timeout if I try again it works. No clue. I've got it installed now. :)

I'm looking for the button, not seeing it. Not to use it mind you....just to know where it is as a retaliatory measure.

You ignore me, I ignore you right back. :P

For the record I think it is a bad idea...it causes people to cement their beliefs by insulating themselves, become unwaveringly obtuse, and unable to understand a different point of view. Also, it's a lazy way to stifle the opposition.

You have to be using the SMF theme to have ignore work. With either theme however, if you go to your profile, there's a new link on the profile showing "Ignore user options" -- I *think* it will show you both who you're ignoring and whose ignoring you. It shows me both.

Perhaps no one is ignoring either of you.

You could both place each other on your ignore lists then post to see if the other has posted if they can see it.  Course you can't see each other so you wouldnt know...which would be the point!   :laugh2:

I just noticed the ignore button on every post.  Damn it's simple to ignore someone now.  That may be too simple.

I'm up to two now as well.  I know one is Frizzle.  I doubt that one will last seeing as he spends so much time in PnR.  No idea who else is on the list.

So who wants to start a pool to see how many "ignores" we can get added to?  We'll need to set a time limit, highest count wins.  Everyone kicks in $10, winner takes all >:D

Sounds sort of counterproductive to the purpose.  Putting in a mod that lets us ignore tools only to have a competition on who can be the most tooly?   :dizzy:

How many folks are ignoring you?  Remember, you can be part of the Tool Nation.

I'm just making a point you got, evidently.  I personally think it's a shame people can't act like adults.  First it was "waaah   I don't want to be able to read P&R and I can't stop myself", and now it's " I can't skip over someone's post even though I don't want to ever read what they have to say"

Give 'em time.  If there's enough people who can't be responsible enough on their own and figure out how to blame the board software (or Saint), it'll come to fruition.

I darn near laughed out loud when I found a Lexus forum with a "Debate" section.  Apparently, there are other forums out there that understand the concept!  I can only imagine the whining that went on when that sub-forum was created.  Oddly enough, I'm not interested in their "debates" and have somehow managed to stay out of there.  Maybe I should document my behavior there and post it as a "How To:" here :laugh2:

Apparently, when someone is being ignored, a message indicating that "You are currently ignoring this member" is displayed in place of the post.

It would be nice for the reverse to also occur, where-in a message that states "You are currently being ignored by this member." displays in place of the ignoring person's post.

I think that would be really lame.  For example, Tommy, may he rest in peace, may have been so emotionally unstable that he would put me on his ignore list.  But that doesn't mean I don't want to see his posts.  Hell, I don't have Dartful ignored, and Tommy's posts were a damned sight more valuable than Dartful's are.

Odd that someone would ignore you.

Is there a list for this or did you check a the profiles of likely "ignorees"? You might have missed pbj there.

There's no list.  You have to think of the usual suspects on your own and then click individually on the person's name to see his profile.  In there it will say, "Ignored by:  x members".  There could very well be someone I'm not thinking of who is ignored by more people, but I doubt it.

The unsettling part about it is that the people I think would be ignoring me apparently aren't, so it leaves me wondering who the hell I pissed off without knowing about it.

I'm pretty sure Lag has me on ignore, so the other one has me somewhat vexed. Oh well....people who use ignore are necessarily ---Bad words, bad words, whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when saint censors you?--- anyway, right?

This concept has me wondering something.  There are topics that are considered taboo.  Many accuse Wunder of being racist.  The big picture is that "in order to fight racism, we need to educate people about it".

Isn't ignoring him effectively saying "we don't really give two steamers about racism because we're willing to pretend Wunder doesn't even exist and therefore won't address any of his points - thereby failing in the mythical goal of "education" as a cure?

Drew, you can't just cross out the word.  You have to replace it with something or your sentence doesn't make sense.  Your post-fu is weak.

As for your thing about racism, I think it's a valid point, but only to a point.  There does come a time when ignoring it probably makes more sense, in the same way we ignore other nutters.  The idea that white people are inherently superior to black people is as absurd as the flat-earth or the young earth.  All three have been casually accepted as not even up for consideration in the past, and it's just taken longer for each to reach a point where such a large portion of society has come to accept the ridiculousness of the ideas that the hangers-on fade into irrelevance.  So who knows?  Maybe you do more damage even dignifying Wunder's racism with debate.  Maybe that serves as much to establish his position as something legitimately worth arguing about as anything else.

Personally, I err on the side of intellectual debate, but that probably has more to do with my addiction to debate than any high-minded ideals.   ;)

Where do you get this shite from?

Are you implying that I EVER implied that whites are inherently "superior to blacks"? You weren't really clear about the connection.

My posts about race have always pretty much revovled around controllable attributes such as the way a person acts or behaves or speaks or conducts themselves....never about something inherently racist like disliking skin color, which is far beyond a person's control. Yet there is always this nexus purported between me and that latter notion.

It has everything to do with what Drew pointed out. Painting me as a "racist" merely allows the conversation to meet an abrupt end, without actually delving into the issues. This despite the left always harping on about how we desperately need a honest discussion on race in this country.

Can't have it both ways my friends.

WunderCade, we've been through this so many times.  Can't you just look back at our previous discussions instead of making me track down the same old threads to support my position over and over again?  You know the threads I'm talking about (e.g., you have to hold your nose to vote for a black man with a muslim name -- both his skin color and name something given him at birth, having nothing to do with his behavior whatsoever).
