Do I need a driver to install used dvd drive?
« on: September 15, 2006, 05:21:49 pm »
I have put together a MAME cab only computer from parts but haven't turned it on yet The problem is my roms are on DVD and all I got is a CD drive. So I start looking for a cheap used DVD drive and noticed that they don't come with drivers. I know that they can be downloaded somewhere but some on eBay say thy dont need drivers. Is this true. I will be running XP

I don't think you've needed drivers for optical drives since the DOS days.
$6.75 the hard way-one quarter at a time.

DVD-Rom will autodetect.  If you want to use the dvd burning feature, you'll need some software.  One that is small and free is ImgBurn.  For more features you may need Nero Burning Rom or similar.
Why not hook up your puter to a network, then you can just transfer all the games you want that way and no need to get and install dvd-rom?

I beleive Windows 2000 and XP autodetect DVD-ROM drives, as do Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X.  Using Windows 98 and earlier may require a special driver. Linux may need a driver or a mount to enable it.

Some BIOSes have a DVD drive setting that may need to be set on their IDE interface for it.   Additionally, most IDE and ATAPI DVD drives have a master/slave/cable select jumper.

In order to burn CDs or DVDs using a DVD burner, you need software to do so, such as Roxio, Sonic, or Nero.

I use DBurnerXP Pro for burning CD/DVDs etc....
Pretty cool free burner. Has more feature than most of the lite burner software out there
