Where: 10-12 Core Cable?
« on: September 13, 2006, 09:04:13 pm »
Hi All,

CAT5 cable is awesome to use for most control projects, because it is cheap, however, I need a cable that has 10-12 individual wires (in other words 5-6 pairs). Is there anywhere where one could obtain this? (I only need small quantities - approx 30ft).

Do any of you have 30-odd feet of this type of cable you would be willing to sell?

The cables here are kinda pricy, but you can find what you're looking for here:

Not so sure you'd find a 30' length of this 'easly' but, an old LPT printer cable is a great source for a multi wire harness, just chop off the ends and start strippin'.

I 've seen em in a local surplus store bargin bins a couple years ago for like a couple of bucks, not sure on the length but am positive they were well in excess of 18-20'.

The store was called American Science and Surplus, I'm almost sure they have a website. Sorry but I don't know it. Could find their phone number if you need it.

I do, I do!

I'd have to roll it out to see how much I have. I would like to keep a small portion of it, but you could have the majority for sure. I have no clue what the price of this stuff is, so let me know what it is worth to you. I'll measure it out tonight if I get a chance.

Cool, you found their web address!
I couldn't find their catalog, they tend to get 'picked up' by anyone who starts looking through one.  (The write ups can be amusing at times)

The store is a hobbiests heaven, lots of oddball crap there just waiting for another chance to serve humanity. I've only been to the Milwaukee area location, I know they have more scattered around.

Yeah, some friends of mine go to the Geneva location pretty frequently. I still haven't been, but I love digging through their web site. Helped inspire me on a project I'm working on for my cab.

I honestly think they haven't taken me yet because the female of the pair is worried about how much the guy and I will geek out and that she'll never get us out of there :laugh2:

Lol!
We have to plan for a couple hours everytime we go because of that very reason. I myself have been there dozens of times and know most of the 'regular' stock items locations by heart. (There is always something new scatteres around throughout the place though)

We usually manage to find a 'first timer' or two to take along with us for the experience. It's a blast to watch their eyes glaze over about 1/2 way down the 3rd or 4th isle.  :dizzy:

You really should check it out man, but be warned, your credit card could take a beatin'!  ;D
