Rally-X Cocktail same as Pac-Man?
« on: September 12, 2006, 09:33:22 pm »
The missus is a big fan of Rally-X and I must admit I do enjoy it a fair bit myself so I'm considering building a Rally-X Cocktail.

I see no plans available for Rally-X but Pac-Man Cocktail plans are available in more than one location so I'm wondering if I can use them...

With the acception of the monitor orientation and the obvious artwork I can't see any difference in the two cabs.  Matter of fact I compared a few part numbers in the manuals of both games and there were some that lined up but others that didn't like the glass.  The part number was different but the dimensions listed were identical.

I am also considering buying a Rally-X cocktail and either restoring it or using the guts for my repro and the cab for a template.  So if anyone knows where I might find one arround NH, USA I'd be interested.
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

Do you have a pic of Rally-X cocktail?

One thing I have noted about Pac cktls is the coin door is a single slot with no logo plate. Shortly after Pac's release, they switched to the 2-slot with logo plate.
NO MORE!!

I'm pretty sure they are the same apart from the monitor orientation.  The shape of the top is the same as Pac Man and Galaxian, which is different than Ms. Pac Man.  The control panels are the same size as Pac Man, which is different than Ms. Pac Man and both are different than Galaxian.

Here's my web page which shows me turning a Rally-X cocktail into a Galaxian themed MAME cab:

Yup, that looks identical to the Pac cocktail I've got sitting right behind me.

Where were you when I was looking for an empty cab?  It was on ebay, and I was the only bidder.  The monitor had bad burn in and the glass was badly scratched.  I sold the board to someone who needed it to get their machine up and running.  I just recently sold the original manual for about the cost of the paypal fees and postage to someone who bought a cocktail.  I had been holding onto it for a couple years with the hope of doing just that.

The machine I bought may have died, but others were brought back from the brink.  I recently got an empty Mad Planets upright for free, and I'm turning that one into a MAME cabinet too.  The guy who gave it to me was trying to get rid of it for about a month with no takers.  Who knows, it may have ended up in the dump if I didn't get it.

On the other side of the fence, I have taken two converted Tempest cabs and restored them back to working Tempests.  Each one cost more to restore than the value of the completed cab, and I sold them for about $250-350 loss each.
