I have this problem with my front usb devices, no matter what I plug in.  Try a different plug.  I.e  I bought a dell system (big mistake)  and the front usb's are funny acting but when I plug the device in the rear and sometimes with a shake or two, it reads the device with out isse.  If the kids bump the cpu, then it is back to square one.....  Not sure what causes it.

Call Dell tech support and get the front panel IO replaced-tech should be out there in a day or two and it will take them 20 mins, tops (if they're new or suck-10 mins if they know what they're doing). Sounds like you likely need the motherboard replaced, too. Yeah, calling them can suck sometimes, so I'll give you some advice for making the call go faster:

When you call, tell them "USB devices never work when I plug them into the front panel, but they work when I plug them in the back" and then when you're on the phone with them talking and they have you swapping things in and out of the front and back panel, tell them "what the...I just pulled out my plug from the back and this little piece of black plastic came out of the USB port with it-you guys are going to fix that, right, since it happened when I was on the phone with you?". Then refuse to do anything more (because you don't want to break anything else) and insist they send a tech to replace the front USB ports and the motherboard. You don't actually have to have a broken USB port in the back, the tech who comes out won't have that much detail on his trouble ticket, just tell him that they were working sporadically and you had to jiggle the cords alot of the time. Techs that come on-site are contractors, not Dell employees, so they really have no vested interest in wether or not they replace hardware-they just get the ticket, drop in what they get sent and go on to the next call.
$6.75 the hard way-one quarter at a time.

That is brilliant!

I have had a number of bad experiences with Dell's tech support in the past and it sounds like you may have too NightGod.

As you may know, their optiplex systems only accepts USB mouse and KB, well one time as their tech support person read me diagnostic steps from a webpage to try and remidy a non functional mouse, they instructed me to delete the USB root hub and all other USB related items from the control panel. I asked them "how will the keyboard be able to respond if we delete this?" and they told me it would be fine. Guess what, it wasn't. They ended up replacing the MoBo and mouse.  ;D

Also, there is some kind of recall for their MoBo's right now, something to do with popping caps near the cpu. If you need a MoBo for a Dell system, there is a long wait for em because of this.

My Happs 3" trackball died on me suddenly as well (Unrecognized USB device, yadda, yadda, etc...) a few months ago right after a thunderstorm. Luckily SlikStik replaced it for free (Mighty Big of them) but I have heard that unless you ground the trackball with the supplied ground wire, they have a "Glass Jaw" when it comes to powersurges.

Insta-Frenchfry.

Just sharing my woes.

GL on this.

I know, it's no new topic but I think it can be helpfull.
Try change position USB jumpers on moherboard for 5VSB mode (default is 5V).
