UltraStik 360 not recognized?
« on: September 03, 2006, 01:05:44 pm »
Hey all:

Just got my SlikStik Classic cab assembled this weekend (oh yes!) and everything seems to work fine, except for the UltraStik 360... actually it DID work the first time I plugged it into the USB port, but after disconnecting and reconnecting once.. now it doesn't recognize the device at all.  :(  I wonder, has anyone else seen this problem, with this or other devices?  Also, how do you "reset" USB devices (registry?) so Windows sees it for the first time?  Maybe it just goofed on the first try.

EDIT: Actually I should add that I believe this happened immediately after I started setting dip switch settings on my new iPac to various positions to fix a problem with THAT device (turns out that was not the solution, but the iPac is working now).  I've reset the dips to their normal position (second vertical row, pins 3 and 4 are covered) but the UltraStik is still not recognized.  Also - I'm using WinXP pro SP2 with all hotfixes.  Frustrating, to say the least - I was really looking forward to checking this joystick out this long weekend.

2ND EDIT: I've just discovered that other systems that have never seen the UltraStick, the IPAC, or anything, are producing the same results: "Device not recognized".  Strange.  Maybe this is some sort of hardware problem? I realize that there can be conflicts with multiple IDs - perhaps it is conflicting with the IPAC somehow?  Anyone know the UltraStick jumper settings?  I've emailed Andy about this (thanks for the suggestion) so hopefully he knows what's up.

3RD EDIT: Just went down to the local computer store and picked up a 2nd USB cable, just to rule that out - no dice, the stick still doesn't work.  At this point I believe I've exhausted all possible troubleshooting options and I'm willing to bet Andy is right - a new board is needed.  He's graciously offered to replace it for me (thanks, Andy - you're tops) so we'll see.  Hopefully they are easy to replace.  Details at 11.  ;)  In the meantime if anyone has any other suggestions, I'm all ears.

Thanks!

I would recommend sending Andy from Ultimarc an email.  He can probably help you out right away.

I've had this happen a couple times with the Ultra 360, dunno why it happens.  Go into the Windows Device Manager, you'll see a device not working (a "HID" Human Interface Device").  Right click that one and choose Uninstall, then do Scan for hardware changes.

Dreamwriter: Yep, tried that too.  Actually ALL of the HID devices appear to work just fine, but in the "USB" section there is one entry called "Unknown Device" that used to say something like "UltraStik 360".  I must have tried uninstalling that 5-10 times under different situations and get the same result - it always comes back "Unknown Device".  :(

I also had this happen.  I think to fix it I uninstalled the device, rebooted, and then reinstalled again.

Good luck!

I can certainly help via email. One possibility is the motherboard having trouble with USB 2.0 devices.

I have problem with U360 under Wi98SE. Win98 don't see my U360 (no unknown device and no ultrastik device in hardware manager).

What I did:
1. Enable PC
2. Plug U360 to PC using USB cable
3. Win98 say that found hew hardware and did something
4. I install Ultramap
5. Run Ultramap but no joysticks is found
6. I go to hardware manager but no unknown device and no ultrastik device there
7. I unplug, plug, reset PC, clear some devices in registry, still the same, no device.
Any help?

I don't have any problems under WinXP on the same PC (second HD).

I will try disable USB 2.0 for Win98.

EDIT
I disabled USB2.0, still the same, no U360.

Heh, Interesting. U360 works fine one weeks ago on my WinXP. Next I plug U360 to the same PC using second hard disk with Win98SE and U360 doesn't work (as I write above).
Yesterday I install WinXP on old hard disk (previosus HD with WinXP I don't have now) and U360 doesn't work!!! Very strange. System say me that it's unknow USB device (one time system say me that it's UltraStik but otherwise it doesn't work). In device manager I see HID Human Interface Device but will yellow mark (problem) and it appear and disappera every 5 seconds (maybe 4 seconds), appear, disappear ....
I upgrade BIOS, USB drivers, UltraStik firmware (1.7 now) and still the same.

On my second PC (notebook) with the same WinXP and with USB1.1 only U360 works fine.

I tried all sugestions above. Nothing. Any more help? Maybe I should downgrade U360 firmaware?

EDIT
My motherboard is ASUS A7V600-X. I have 8 USB ports, I plug U360 in all ports.
I see in registry UltraStik and I see HID game controller in registry too. But in hardware manager it doesn't work.

EDIT
Probably I found solution. I change USB jumpers on my motherboard from 5V to 5VSB postion. U360 works fine now under WinXP and Win98SE.

Interesting thing that I have my previous HD and U360 doesn't work now on it with USB jumpers sets to 5V. Strange. With 5VSB all is OK.
