Ported sub in mini-galaga
« on: August 29, 2006, 06:23:37 pm »
The facts:
1. I've got a set of Creative I-Trigue 3300 speakers which includes a ported sub.

2. My cab is on casters which creates about a 1/2" gap around the bottom

3. The cab is approximately 2'x2'x4.5' (for area purposes if they are needed)

My plan:
I was thinking that I'd cut a ~8" hole in the bottom of the cab and aiming the sub out of it

The questions:
Will enclosing the sub in the arcade machine affect the purpose of the port?
Will the sub, being ported, affect the arcade machine in an undesirable manner?

I was thinking that if it is going to be a problem that I could cut a port-sized hole in the back of the cab and place the sub in a way that the holes would line up but I don't want to do that if I don't have to, hence this post...
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

Article on putting subs in cabinets.

I have a ported sub in the bottom of a cab.  I found that I needed a large opening for it to sound right.  This was done by putting speaker cloth over a large square cut in the door. If your woofer is pointed down you will loose some of its effectiveness if the port cannot fire into free air as well.  If the port is enclosed you will muffle some of the sound from your subwoofer.
