2 player Karate Champ
« on: September 01, 2006, 02:50:26 pm »
In my teens I used to love playing friends in Karate Champ which as you recall uses two joysticks per player.  This control configuration is driving me nuts on my current control panel configuration (which is the typical two fighter single joystick 7 button (to accomodate a neo-geo layout too) layout).  One player games are easy to deal with as I can simply use both joysticks, but two player sucks.  Basically I am assigning the right joystick commands to buttons, but do to the typical fighter layout the buttons are not intuitively oriented.  I'm just curious how others are dealing with this...if at all.

Karate champ Vs. used four four way joysticks. The only way I could play this game well was with four ways. Trying to play it on an 8 way is tough cause your guy stutters and does all kinds of things you didn't tell him to do if you aren't precise with your movements.

Otherwise - I love this game too.

I agree rearding trying to play with 8-ways.  However, I wasn't really even thinking about the 8-way v 4-way issue because my joystic is switchable.  I was really thinking about just the second joystick issue (or ummm lack thereof).

One of the greatest games in the arcade.  I just started working on some artwork this week for a Karate Champ themed Combat Minions(TM) panel... for myself.

Dual sticks is the only way to go.

Yeah, you really need the four, 4 way sticks for this one.  Great game, well worth the trouble.  :)

There is really no good way to do it without having two joysticks per player. If you had 4 buttons that were arranged in a diamond pattern then that could make a passable substitute for the 2nd joystick, but I'm guessing that you don't.

I never knew there was an alternating single player version of this game until now. All the versions I've seen had 4 sticks. The listing on KLOV shows the 4 stick version for both types (and some other job with bootleg-looking art on it).
