Light bulbs to pc power dongle
« on: August 29, 2006, 01:39:25 pm »
is it safe to run 2 90 watt bulbs to a 5v volt pc power dongle?

right now im torn over whether to use the light sockets that came with my cab with a pc or if i should use a flourescent light fixture.  only thing is how to mount the light fixture when the origs are mounted already.

hmmm...a 90 watt, 5 volt DC light bulb... yeah that makes sense.
Sorry, I couldn't resist.  ;D

Odds are that those are  regular incandescent AC bulbs and fixtures. You run them straight off wall power. As a side note, you should never hook ANYTHING that draws more than a signal voltage to your dedicated computer power supply. If you want to add a dedicated computer power supply for lighting then go ahead.

i figured someone would say that me asking that was stupid.  i know it was stupid but needed an answer.

well dont want to use another ps and id have to wire them to a wall outlet plug which i have no idea how to do so im going to go with a flourescent fixture.  just need to mount the thing somehow.

Why not just use a power strip and two of these?

wow almost look like the ones in my cab sans the power cord.  would it be safe to hack a power cord from a radio (kind with the one end having a square and circle connecter) to the socket?

You can get add-on plugs for lamps at a hardware store. They are made so that you can stick unstripped wires into the holes on the back, and then close up the socket and you are good to go.
Or the cheap way, cut a power cord off of some junk thing you don't use any more, and then peel back the outside sleeve of the power cord to the plug and the light. Connect black wire to black wire, and white wire to white wire. Use wire nuts for connections and then wrap wire nut with electrical tape.
To tell you the truth, you should have a decent understanding of electronics and wiring before you ever take the casing off of anything electrical - including arcade games. It could save your life in extreme cases, but most of the time will just keep you from getting a full body muscle workout.  ;D (IE getting zapped)
It was not a stupid question at all, and I'm glad you asked it. Dumb people are the ones that just start hooking crap up and then bad things happen.
Notice that I was just picking with you at the beginning. I love answering newbie questions. Feel free to PM me any questions you are uncomfortable asking in public.

newb?  id like to think my year of posting in EE has made me a vet.  really cant learn much more about how to wire things than in EE.

the ones i have had ring connectors at the ends and where held in place by a nut and bolt.  i like the cheap way since i get the cords, cut the ends and attach to extra ring connectors i have.  maybe first ill see what my local hardware store has.  to be on the safe side.

I'm guessing you are meaning these?

Sounds like a plan then. remember that the part the light screws into should be ground and the stem that touches the bottom of the bulb is the hot wire.
