Opening a coin door without the keys?
« on: August 27, 2006, 06:27:33 am »
I just bought a showcase arcade cab and the guy that sold it to me doesn't have the keys to the coin door any more.

Is there a way to open it up? I wanna eventually take the coin mechs out and transform the control panel stand into a 2 shelf storage cabinet (hopefully to house my PC, xbox, and ps2). But of course, I will keep the coin door but make a door out of the entire front (to make it still look like an arcade).

thanx!

Oh, and here's a picture of the control panel/coin door.

If You can get into it from the back (somehow??   ??? ) then you can easily remove the lock without damaging the nice front panel

From the inside, undo the bolt that holds the locking arm; remove it. Open the door.
If you build a frankenpanel, chances are I don't care for you as a person.

If, for some odd reason, there is no access from the back, just use a titanium (gold color) drill bit and drill out the locking cylinder.  That can be replaced for a few bucks at the Home Depot.

That's a cheap lock. If you have to drill it you don't even need a special bit, any bit for metal will do. Take your time though, stopping to allow things to cool off periodically, because things will get hot fast.

A nice strong screwdriver and a quick twist will break locks like that most of the time, they're not exactly high security.

Anyone know if it's possible to maybe remove the entire front of the CP stand entirely? I would like it to be like one large door.

Has anyone considered he might be asking so he can go rip off some machines in his neighborhood? :)
Just kidding of course. But ya gotta admit this thread reads a lot like a how-to-break-into-arcade-machines (and payphones etc) tutorial. :)

Only difference between this thread and how-to-break-into-arcade-machines (and whatever else) is that i have actual pictures of my cabinet

if he was trying to rip off an arcade hed be making a mistake they never have any quarters in them since no one goes to them anymore lol.

kidding but id think he wouldnt care about the best way to get them off without damaging the cab hed want to get in and out anyway.

but to answer your question you could but consider if it would be able to stay upright when the door would be open.  maybe cut the front so there is a frame around it (like keep some of the front panel connected) for support and for a place to mount a door.

Check out how he has it secured in there once you get inside-might just be a few screws with putty and paint over them from the front, so you could just dig those out and then cut a new sheet and hinge it in place.

And seriously, if you could walk into an arcade and get away with taking a drill to the locks, I'd say you deserve every quarter you get =p Not like someone who really wanted to break into an arcade would have alot of difficulty figuring out the logistics of it on-line. There's a reason most arcade machines you see on routes these days have bars welded across the front and high security padlocks in place.

If you don't want to drill the lock (which is my #1 option, BTW) unscrew the control panel and take it off. There will be an opening from the CP box into the pedestal you should be able to reach through and unscrew the arm off the back of the lock. If the hole is too small for your arm, there should be 4 bolts holding the CP box to the top of the pedestal, take them out and you will have a bigger hole to work in. Shouldn't take you more than 1/2 hour to do it going that way. With the drill and a good bit you'll be inside in 5 minutes.

1/2 hour to remove one screw off the back of the lock? Even if you have to unscrew the CP, a cordless drill and 2 minutes tops >.<

pic the lock using a bic pen.  thats how i got mine off (lol).  just get a pen and take out the clear plastic piece that holds the ink and use that part.

you may have to cut the end so it bends easier.  dont cut it off but cut so that you would have 4 or so pieces at the end that bend.  i didnt explain that well but maybe you can find out what i mean.

I agree, shouldn't take that long, but I'm being realistic. From start to finsih, including the time to figure out where the heck you left your tools and to put everything back together it could take 1/2 hour.

Then the time should be similar for drilling, since you not only have to find the drill, you have to find a decent quality bit =p

And since he wants to get that thing apart to do some construction on it anyway, he'll be doing the exact same thing sooner or later.
