Desoldering the mount off the circuit board for trackball

Hello everyone,

I am working on the possibility of using my Logitech Trackball Marble in my CP. Unfortunately, the circuit board on which the ball mount and optical pickup are soldered will not fit in-line on my CP. The ball mount would fit fine, however.

Is there any way to de-solder the ball mount and optical pickup from the circuit board, and then solder them to a wire and then have the circuit board mounted separately or even better dangling back there somewhere? Can this be reliably accomplished by a non-pro? Is the ball mount likely to be glued as well as soldered to the circuit board? Is there any way to find out before wrecking this sensitive optical device? lol.

If you think it would help, I'll post pics of all of this stuff tonight.
