Ipac/Mame settings and multi-players
« on: March 17, 2003, 09:33:53 am »
Is there any way to configure Mame so that games designed for only one joystick can use inputs from two sticks (one at a time)?

For example, the original Donkey Kong has a single stick.  Two players can play, but they must share the single stick.

My Mame cabinet will have sticks for 2 players.  In Donkey Kong with normal Mame settings, my understanding is that the players will still have to share the player 1 stick.  The second player would be unable to use to player 2 stick because Donkey Kong isn't designed for use with multiple sticks.

I am wondering if it is possible to tell Mame that the players can use either joystick?   I am using an Ipac for the encoder.  Would it be possible to tell Mame that in Donkey Kong, either "x" or "y" means go up, where x is the up for player 1's stick and y is up for player 2's stick?  I think I could also wire the player 2's stick to the Ipac's ports for player 1 through some kind of relay or switch, but I was hoping that I could avoid extra wiring.

Call me crazy, but I thought that was the way it was set up by default.

I do believe you can set up both X and Y to both be "UP" for just donkey kong..

have you tried hitting TAB and then going to the current games control settings?  I do believe you can have more than one key be a certain button..

Yes you can configure both joysticks to be player1 at the game level, this does mean that if player 2 moves his stick while player 1 is playing it will mess him up.

Why not just share stick 1? Its seems like a lot of extra work and player 2 is going to play with his stick while player 1 is playing. Thats just the way things are, no way is playing 2 going to stand there holding his stick and not play with it.

That sounds really bad . . .

You can also set multiple keys to the same input using controller.ini files.  See www.mameworld.net and the links to EasyEmu for help setting them up.
