Standard menu/command buttons
« on: August 25, 2006, 03:38:19 pm »
Before I drill too many holes I'm curious what the basic command buttons should be, besides the coin buttons, pause, exit. Mine are hidden on the backside of a panel, but I probably have space for 3 on each side.

I did pretty much what you've said. I have three small momentary switches on the underside of the CP. These do PAUSE/COIN1/ESCAPE. Via my IPAC the shifted functions are SNAP/COIN2/RESET

I did it this way so as not to have extra buttons showing that wouldn't be on a real cabinet, but also to have the convenience of straight forward one hit buttons for coin / pause / escape.

Any other command buttons (E.g. F2/F11) I've put on shifted buttons on the CP itself.

Seems to give the best of all worlds!

i have four.  Esc, Enter, Tab, and Pause.  enter, while not really needed for mame, comes in handy for some other emulators, and navigating windows

I only have two extra buttons on mine - an Exit button (for backing out of MAME menus and MAME itself, same button that starts the games in my front end) and a Menu button (same as Tab).  You can program Mame to use joystick and a normal game button to navigate Mame's menus and make changes once you are in the menu.  I figure if I ever need to actually exit entirely out to Windows, I'll hook up a real keyboard.

I don't have a lot of extra space, so I rely completely on the IPAC shifted functions. Only esc. is noted on my CPO.
