Modular cabinets
« on: August 23, 2006, 02:31:27 pm »
This topic came up in another thread I was posting in.  Just wanted to hear about this from the people who have modular cabinets.

 - What kind of cab do you have, and what does each "module" consist of?
 - Did you design modularity into your cabinet at conception, or did you "retro-fit" it?

i dont have a modular one but i can offer what i planned to do.

have it be 3 parts-base, cp, and monitor.

each is completely enclosed except for holes to run wires through this way nothing can get damaged.  i was going to incorporate locks and rails to keep it all together as well as screws or bolts.

other people have used cam locks.

the main thing to consider is that its stays sturdy.

I used the plans for the so called UAII from mameroom.com, which can be easily modified so you can take the cabinet apart if needed (in the 3 pieces SithMaster mentioned).  The thought of carrying that thing in one piece out of my basement was enough motivation for me to do it.

The cab I am building can be broken down into 4 parts.  It is a 2 seater sit down cockpit.  It will fit through any standard doorway.  The picture is not the latest but you can get a good idea of how it breaks down.  The back portion, middle console, front portion housing the tvs, and the base all are independent and connected internally.

I have a modular control panel (see the web site in the signature) but the cabinet itself does not break down.
