AMD 3200 still good?

Is the AMD 3200 still a good CPU to use?  Not sure what has changed in v107 or what might be in the works.  Duel core still not useful yet?

What CPU would you guys suggest for under $200

um...ya.....AMD 3200 is still more then you need for mame.  With that you'll be able to run every game current machines can play.

Emulation isn't nearly to the point of needing anything more than that.

You won't be able to play the namcos11.c, zn.c, midvunit.c, and most of the stv.c games at 100%; which more modern CPUs can play, particularly the Intel Conroes.

Those also come with more "modern" prices.......99.95% of anything you want to do with emulation will be done with that 3200.

Pentium M 730 or Pentium M 750

With the appropriate ASUS motherboard and a CT-479 adapter, you can overlock it to 2.6-2.8GHz very easily and get better performance than an Athlon FX-57 in most MAME games.

Last time I checked, you could get a Pentium M 730 and a CT-479 adapter for about $170.  Then, you'd just have to track down a CT-479 compatible ASUS motherboard.


People are also reporting fantastic results in MAME with the new Intel Core 2 Duo processors which are descended from the Pentium M.  The E6300 can be had for under $200 and I hear they overclock really well.


Note that regardless of CPU, dual cores and/or hyperthreading doesn't benefit MAME at all.

i'm not too sure krick, but it sounds like squirrellydw is an AMD dude.  and if that's the case...

 

sorry, i don't find too many other AMD dudes like me out there.  i picked up a cpu/mobo combo at fry's about a month ago.  i got the 3200+ socket 939, and an ECS mobo.  ECS is a fairly "economical" mobo, (a term i learned in one of my business composition classes), but my rig is running like a champ.  i did get that typical response from my friends, "dude, you are a bozo for buying an A64 for your mame rig."  as far as the core type, i'm not too sure.  though if you do go with an A64, i hear the socket 939 are the way to go, rather than the socket 754.

honestly, I don't care if its AMD or Intel.  I have just heard that the AMD 3200 is a great CPU, I might go with a 3700 or 4000 now that they are so cheap.  I will look at the Intel's also.  I was originally going to get the 3200 but I wasn't sure if anything changed in v107 or if anything was going to change to take affect of the duel core CPUs coming out.

I got a Sempron 3000 Socket A / ECS mobo combo for $79 at Fry's over a year ago and I have never had any problems with it for my rig...

The A64 with 939 sockets seem overkill for emulation, but hey, they are nice and cheap nowadays, plus it is actually harder to find Socket A Semprons than it is to get an A64 939.

I'm running the 3200 in my mame cabinet on an MSI motherboard with onboard video.  Can run almost all games in mame (driving USA and a couple others are a little slow).  Nintendo 64 games run well as well as Playstation one games.  NewEgg is currently selling the 4000 for around $135.  The 4000 with a decent video card should run just about anything being sold new in the stores as well as 95% of the emulated titles.

Add one more to the AMD camp! I haven't bought an Intel since PIII 500, and haven't regretted it at all.

I am currently running a Sempron 3300+ that I picked up for $119 shipped. All I know is that every game I have tried so far works great. I really haven't bothered with the CHD games - maybe in another 10 years I'll check them out...   

I'll have to check out Driving USA to see how it runs on my system.

Also an AMD fan, but it seems the new Intel Core 2 Duo  are kings of the heap atm.. Great price on the CPU's too!  to bad the MB cost more then the CPU's     As for for plain old gameing  you just cant beat the AMDS for price perform  right now. But as soon as MB prices drop on the Intel Core 2 Duo  boards.... Look out they are pretty impressive.

Yeah, I run and AMD also.

An AMD Duron 650.
And it runs just about enough mame emulation I can handle.
(Aside from the CHD games, duh, and a select few others that I don't know of anyone running at 100%.)
It helps to have plenty of ram and not alot of background crap running.

Guess I've just been happy with what I have.

I'm wondering how an overclocked Core 2 Duo Extreme will handle MAME. I was reading an article and noticed that encoding a 7.4 GB DVD (CPU intensive application) went from about 4 HOURS on a P4 3.0 Ghz to 12 MINUTES on an 2.9 Extreme OCd to a rock-solid 3.6 on water cooling.

Since the bottleneck in MAME for the newer games has always been the CPU, I'm wondering what this means for us. Now we just need someone with an extra 3 grand or so to test it out for us

My first AMD I build was a k6-2 550.  It is not running anymore, but out of the 10 or so I have built they have always been AMD BABY!!!!

3200 is a great chip i have had mine for sometime now and i haven't had to mess with it one little bit, and i must say that its doing a heck of a job with the video card i have in it...

I got that deal, it's great.  If you choose one of the MicroATX boards it even has a built-in videochip so all you need is RAM and a power supply (as long as you only wanna run MAME; modern PC games I'd recommend a real video card)
