Your screen resolution when visiting BYOAC?
« on: March 15, 2003, 08:09:33 pm »
Hardest part about designing a web site is the fact that what it looks like when you develop isn't necessarily what it looks like on your visitor's machine.  I've long since stopped using anything less than 1024 x 768, and web-build accordingly.

I know there are things I can do to have pages that accomodate intelligently varying screen sizes, but my skills aren't there yet.  Until then, I'd like to get an idea of what everyone is using.  Please fill out the survey.

Thanks!

Greater than 1024 x 768

However, my IE window is probably around 1000x600 as I like having multiple windows towards the top of the screen and IRC chat near the bottom so I can watch the action.

Actually, here's what my screen looks like normally (copy and past)

Well, since web design has been my full time job for the last 6 years, I can tell you if at all possible, don't go above 800x600 for a site design.  A vast majority of people are at that rez, and there isn't much reason to build a site that requires any more room than that.

I run at 1024x768 at home (considerably larger at work) but rarely have the browser maxed full screen, so you can't always go just by screen rez either.  I usually run my browser at 900x700 or so, regardless of the resoltion my monitor is.

As far as making a "liquid" design, just stick w/ percentages for widths on stuff.  For the beginner, that should allow you to keep things consistant between different resolutions pretty simply.

1024x768, but my actual viewable browser screen is ~875x550 (almost the same for both browsers I use).  Note I'm not including the menu bar, html address, etc in the viewable screen size.

I use 1024 X768, whatever the next size up from that is when I'm at work... and I use 800 x 600 on the craptop.

I agree with vitaflow, websites shouldn't be designed much larger than 800x600.  Although I run my desktops at 1400x1050.  Plenty of room.

irregardless of this polls results.. As a professional web Designer I'd reccomend sticking with 800x600.  The site I run gets millions of unique visitors each month and by far teh majority are running 800x600, running Windows 98, and using IE5.5

Yeah, as a web designer, also, you simply CAN NOT go beyond 800x600.  The well-designed websites that I have seen use a trick to make it look acceptable even for 640x480 - they'll have a pane on the right side of the screen full of advertisements and bonus materials, but all of the real content sits within 640x480 so that even a 640x480 person will be able to read everything without it being a nightmare.

The people answering this poll will ALL be of a more technical nature than the average joe out there.  The trend has moved to 800x600 (thank god!), but there are still plenty of people out there running 640x480.

For an intranet site at work, we forced people to go to 800x600, and everyone wanted to have our heads.  "I wear thick glasses already and it hurts my eyes"...

I agree, I have all my computers at 800x600, and I have my homepage set to "http://www.arcadecontrols.org/yabbse/index.php"

because having the msg board in the "http://www.arcadecontrols.org" frames makes it virtually unuseable... (especially if someone posts a wide pic in a thread, every msg in that thread that has no carriage returns goes as wide as that pic, so I have to scroll left to right to read every single line...serious pain in the ass)

2048x1536 (which is 1600x1200 viewable, and the desktop 'shifts' to display the other areas). My secondary monitor is 1280x1024.

the more desktop space .. the better!

My parents refuse to use anything other than 640x480. They would probably use 320x240 if they could. They also use AOL. This means that they have to scroll the screen back and forth to read each line on each webpage.

It is not an eyesight thing. My stepfather has great vision. It is more a refusal to change thing. Because even computer nerds with foot thick glasses run 1024x768 (or higher) most of the time. (I run 1024 on everything 14"-21" when I am away from my laptop).

I always change up to 1024X768 when I come to this site so that I can see it better.

But otherwise I'll either use 800X600 or 1024X768 depending on how large the monitor is.

I don't like doing 1024X768 on a 15" but I will on anything larger.

800x600.  I'm still on the same old 15" monitor I bought back in 1995.  It works fine, I can see what I'm doing.

The monitor does support 1024x768, but interlaced.  It gives me a headache.

I voted 1024x768 but that is only when I'm on my new comp. If I'm on my old comp the resolution is 640x480 and if I'm at school its 800x600. Lol, allmost all the colors of the rainbow.  :P
