Adjusting 8-way Joysticks
« on: August 17, 2006, 11:06:17 am »
What's the best way to adjust a joystick for better diagonal accuracy?  The reason I am asking this is my joystick doesn't seem to be accurate when playing fighting games.

Thanks,

Jimmy

What kind of JS are you using? How is it mounted? Is it mounted straight? If it is mounted at a with slight rotation 1. make sure you play at a little angle, or 2 remount the JS.

I don't see a brand name on it, but it looks like this:

It mounts straight to the control panel using built in bolts.. The control panel is slightly angled down.  I play standing up and and I'm 99 percent sure that's not the issue.  If I just angle it the upper right corner I sometimes have to wiggle it to get the two switches to engage.  The joysticks are old from roughly 1995.  I guess what I am asking is if i should play around with bending the contact bars that press the switch.

Looks like a Happs Super.
You can try taking the little e-clip on the bottom of the joystick shaft off, and then flipping the little 'actuator' the opposite direction and see if you get better results.  I'd do that before trying bending the microswitch contact strips.

I will try this when I get home. Thanks!

And if that doesn't work, they're cheap joysticks. Hit up one of the Happ guys on the B/S/T forum.

Your best bet is to just buy a new joystick. They aren't very expensive. Your problem is likely caused by bad microswitch(es) and/or general wear and tear. With replacement joysticks of that type being so inexpensive, it isn't worth the effort to try to fix the one you have, which won't be as nice as a new one regardless of what you do.

Consider yourself lucky that it is such an inexpensive and readily available as-brand-new joystick, and not something like an SNK/Seimitsu LS-30.
