Intro Movie resolution?
« on: August 14, 2006, 12:26:46 pm »
Typically when I am producing video I am working at 720 x 480(6) as that is what the standard is for SD. If I am playing on a cab with MAMEWah the with a res of 640 x 288, do I build a movie to that dimension, or do I build it at 640 x 480 as that is what windows is set to (via ultimarc quick res)? What framerate should I use? With TV I produce at 29.97 FPS. On a computer that is a non issue. So, can it run 30 FPS, will it keep up?

It is time to make a open vid for my cab. I do not want the standard mame open (not saying that it doesn't rock) I just have spent a lot of time making this original, I want the whole experience to be cohesive.

No entirely sure what you are asking so now is the perfect time for me to comment.  I think you are planning to show the video from mamewah using the intro move support.  If this is the case, then you have an option in the ### Movie Options ### section of the mamewah.ini that you can use to determine the video aspect ratio but I don't think there is a resolution setting.

It has been a couple of months since I played with this (I could only watch my the lame movie I made a few times before I dumped it) but if I remember right mamewah uses a picturebox control sized to the mamewah layout size.  Some one please tell me if I am wrong.  So I would think you would want the video to be 640 x 288.  Although I can't image it would look bad if you create it at a higher resolution as long as you set the keep_movie_preview_aspect to video_aspect to preserve the aspect ratio.
-Edit now that I think about it you may need to use game_aspect (which is the default) but that setting is easy to change and if you make the video to 640 x 288 it won't matter anyway.

As to the can the machine handle it question, that is more a question of hardware.  I was running a 30 FPS movie and it worked on my Pent 4 260.  My proc got spiked while it was running but it still worked.  Of course you milage my vary.

Yeah, I am sure that the processor would keep up, I was unsure about frame rate a standard card would be able to produce. I could be in imaginary land, but somewhere I thought I heard that even though there is 30 fps, a standard computer monitor can not keep up with that.  ???

I edit on on PC and it always looks fine, I always preview on an actual TV style monitor. It would seem that a computer should be able to out frame a TV, so perhaps it was imaginary land.

I am going to start playing with my idea today. After Effects is my friend.  :D
