help with multiple mice inputs
« on: August 10, 2006, 12:21:55 pm »
I currently have a trackball in my cabinet that is interfaced using a ps2 mouse hack.  it works fine.  I am in the process of making a spinner that will also use a ps2 mouse hack.  before i started working on the spinner, i connected the mouse i intend to use.  windows sees both mice fine, i can use either mouse to navigate my frontend and everything, but once i launch a game, only the trackball works.  If i exit the game and go back to the frontend, they both work fine again.

(trackball is connected to PS2 port, spinner mouse is connected to a ps2 to usb adaptor)

Is there something i can do to get the games to work with either mouse?

i'm using mame .105 with Mala as a front end.

Do you really mean "either", or "both"?

Mame does either, as now it looks at each mouse seperately, just like (analog) joysticks.  Looks like your spinner is mapped to player 2?  Remap the games you want to use the spinner to use the spinner instead of the TB (remap "Dial Analog" to the spinner).

If you want both TB and spinner for all games, remap "Input (general)" instead to both mice.  But IIRC, any input from the one you list first will override any input from the second, which is fine unless you bump the first by accident when using the second.  (I might be wrong, test it and see.)  The other way is to down-grade to an older mame that saw all mice as one device.

i think i want mame to recognize them both as the same device, so "BOTH".

i fired up arkanoid, hit tab and went to the input general.
i went to player 1 controls
set mouse x analog to Mouse 1 x and mouse 2 x
set mouse y analog to mouse 1y and mouse 2 y

this however did not affect the controls of arkanoid.  so i went into Input (this game)
and set
P1 dial x to mouse 1x and mouse 2x
p2 dial x to mouse 1x and mouse 2x

this did let me user either one.

the real question here is, shouldnt the general input settings work?  why would i have to change it for each game?

not that big of a deal, i dont think there are many spinner or trackball games that i play regularly, but it would be nice if the general settings worked.

thanks for your quick reply, i guess i can start building my spinner now.

Some are considered 'dial' and some are 'paddle' I believe.  You just have to set them all in the general options.  'Track X' and 'Track Y' are for trackball games.  You shouldn't have to set them for each individual game.

i'll have to mess with it more.  i finally got it mounted in my panel, problem i found now is that when i turn the spinner to the right, the mouse moves left.  i found settings to reverse it, but then my trackball is backwards...im not sure how to easily rewire the spinner to register opposite directions, so i may have to rewire the trackball, which shouldnt be as hard.

I mounted it near the back of my panel, beside my trackball.  i dont think it is a great position, but im soon due for a full panel redesign...as soon as i figure out what i am going to do for a 4way stick. Im considering a magstik plus to replace my player 1 stick (currently x-arcade stuff).  If i like the way it feels enough to use it as a full time 8 way and 4 way stick, i'll get a second one so they match...if not, i may end up getting a dedicated 4 way stick and mounting it somewhere, so i want to figure that out before i redo everything.  I took some pics of the spinner fabrication, i'll post them maybe tomorrow if i get time.

i made mine using a hard-drive hack...it worked really well, and cost less than $10.  I'll look at the options tomorrow...the wife is after me to go to bed.
