This guy has a point...
« on: August 01, 2006, 08:15:44 pm »
I'm sure you guys have probably seen this site before, but he as a point

This one for example
http://www.wickedretarded.com/~crapmame/4.html

an otherwise decent cabinet with a huge, unnecessarily wide control panel with the track ball way out of sight of the monitor

http://www.wickedretarded.com/~crapmame/8.html

This one just looks silly.. Like a giraffe or something. Huge ass empty space..ugly

http://www.wickedretarded.com/~crapmame/9.html

This one's super wide but has a 4" monitor in it.. wtf?
Don't build arcade machines if you can't put a decent sized tv or something in there.

http://www.wickedretarded.com/~crapmame/10.html

That one's gotta be a pleasure to play on

http://www.wickedretarded.com/~crapmame/11.html

Maybe it's unfinished, I don't know.. but it looks stupid
super skinny cabinet with a super wide control panel... the rest just looks bad

http://www.wickedretarded.com/~crapmame/19.html

All that work and a stupid x-arcade

http://www.wickedretarded.com/~crapmame/20.html

seriously, tomb raider???

http://www.wickedretarded.com/~crapmame/22.html

i can't see the monitor, are you supposed to use your imagination?

http://www.wickedretarded.com/~crapmame/23.html
that page is excellent

I don't think his point is that people can't build whatever they want to enjoy themselves, but don't post it on the internet to "show off" if it looks like crap
"Yeah... at least he built a cabinet. I can't wait to see yours. "

Seems like this link shows up every couple weeks don't it?

Couple points:

  • Beauty is in the eye of the beholder
  • If you enjoy these kinds of rambling rants - visit Maddox at the Best Page in the Universe
  • If you build one of these cabinets... you know the costs can force you to compromise. In the case of arcade paradise, you can read his thoughts on why he did what he did and what he learned from it
  • Who knows if there were limitations involved. For example, if the guy who built Ms. Stacie was 13, had no job and 100 bucks to build a cabinet.

I read this a while back when it first came out. If you don't take it too serious (which you shouldn't), it's kind of funny. Overall, I think some people are afraid to publish their work for fear of being featured as a 'what not to do' kind of cabinet, when the truth is the arcade community is some of the nicest folks I've run into online.

You are assuming that he had a point. Maybe it was just recreation. (Remaining 30 discussions not cited ... this was the funniest)

You should be careful what you post in PA ... a bunch of that material came from here.

Cheers.

He really doesn't though. I understand what he's going for, but the few funny lines he has is surrounded by pointless cursing. Just because you add the work "F**K" to a sentence doesn't make that sentence funny.

Well, he puts his own creation on there. I give him points for that. I'm sure my first one is going to end up there too :P I just think swearing is just lazy. It can be funny (Richard Pryor), but almost all the time is just abused (almost all comics today).

BYOAC's web design is old and archaic, and doesn't look as good as many other sites out there. Maybe I should take it down in shame.

It hardly seems necessary to visit his site.  You seem to have recreated it right here.

Something like that web page is best left to the real world, where you can talk with your buddies about it.  Online, it just reads like he's bitter about his own efforts and wants to take down as many other projects as he can in order to be "better" than at least a few people in the world.

My first ever woodworking project sucked.  Perhaps with someone like him pointing it out for the rest of the world to see, I wouldn't share with anyone else ever again for fear of being ridiculed yet again.  What if some of the "better" cabs around here had never gotten built because of an asinine page like that, or worse yet, if they were built and never shared?

Oh I know. There's also software like this: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/532/ that will check your links for you. Personally, I have the book, so I hardly check anything but the board unless I'm looking for something in particular.

EDIT: I guess that doesn't work on the site. My bad!

I always liked the multi-colored button thing.

Examples page- hopefully when ever you click on one it will open in a new maximized window in the future. I hate reduced size pages

Please don't.  I can't stand websites that feel the need to size your windows for you.  That's just bad design IMO.  Most browsers remember your window settings when you close them so if you close one and then open a new one it will use the new size.  This happens alot with popups and ads.  Irritating.

Just because you add the work "F**K" to a sentence doesn't make that sentence funny.

Maybe you just aren't fully comprehending the genius comedy that he is creating?  perhaps you should go watch Everybody Loves Raymond instead.

(if you didn't catch the reference, don't worry.. I'm not actually making fun of you)

This site has been posted here a lot of times already.  It's a bit mean spirited, but funny to read the first time.  It can get a bit old though after a while (the pages themselves, not the reposts, although that is tiresome too)

I feel the same way.  While I don't think any of those cabs are particularly great, the builders obviously spent a lot of time making them (because these things take a lot of time to build).  Also, I notice that "Arcade Paradise" is featured on there but I'm sure most of us have seen "Arcade Paradise 3" and are quite jealous of how kick ass it is.  It probably wouldn't have been possible without learning from the original.

Personally, I think the site is hilarious - but for a one time read only...  One thing you have to remember when looking at examples is that they're old.  They pre-date cheap 27" tv's and 21" CRT's.  They sometimes pre-date affordable keyboard encoders.  When you look around at all the new stuff coming out now, it really has made the creative process much easier.  Even a lot of the frankenpanel stuff will likely go away with some of the new joysticks coming out.  It was much more laborious back a couple years ago even...

I find myself pretty critical of some of the "examples" but whenever you can read about the creative thought and restrictions that went into the cabinet along with the pictures, you can see why they chose to do what they needed to do.

I'm just still not sure about pac-matt...

So what's wrong with using a 21" CRT or a TV???  Having an old 21" CRT no one wanted was the main reason I started down the path of making my own cab.

While I do think this site is mean I personally found most of the examples funny and I did enjoy all the swearing and thought that added a lot to the site.  However, I wouldn't appreciate my cab appearing on a site like that...

I am pretty sure that he didn't mean anything was wrong with them. Now that they are readily available it is much easier to make a nice looking cab. Since many of those cabs were being ripped on for using 15" CRTs in a huge cab, he made the abaove point.

I just wish crapmame was still handing out awards. I submitted my project as well as my friend's. We made some really bad design decisions. But we don't care, our cabinets are still fun. And it's websites like crapmame that help others learn what to avoid (and give an image of why).

Could be X-Arcade guy is waiting to scrap the jack together to get better controllers...Looks like he has allowed room for future expansion in that dept.
I know the guys at work have asked about the progress on my cab on more than one occasion...he (x-arcade guy) may have posted the pics before he finished the cab.
Also...if you throw some decent joys in an x-arcade, they play pretty nice.

I know my cab will not be "pretty" but I also know, when I informed the kids that we may not have the money to build it, they were extremely disappointed. Comprimises will be made to build it...no matter how ugly it may be.

Good post Xam.

I take some offense to the OP's comment about ArcadeParadise's monitor being small. If you visit his site (www.arcadeparadise.org) he does a good job explaining all his decisions. As a matter of fact, the timeframe at which it was built was before using a TV was even discussed as an arcade monitor. I learned a lot from Sasquatch at ArcadeParadise. He was very helpful. If anything, he was a pioneer. It would be the same as looking at a modern automobile and then laughing at the modelT.

You can't have the good without the bad!  :)

Yeah... at least he built a cabinet. I can't wait to see yours.  >:D

Just so you know, what he was trying to do was build a cabinet for his wide frame (he's a big guy). Now, you may be too young to know this, but when his cabinet was being built large displays were expensive. Prohibitively expensive. So, if your choice was to build a cabinet with some compromises or not build a cabinet at all... In case you can't tell, and I assume you cannot, it's a 19" monitor.

My point, which if you look up you'll see it (since it flew over your head), was that his cabinet was built a long time ago and by todays standards it looks out of place. I can assure you if you saw this cabinet 8 years ago you would've been in awe.

Anyhow... I'll be looking forward to seeing pics of your cabinet!  :laugh2:

Nicely said, Lew.

Saquatch is a great guy and has been very generous with the help he has provided the community over the years, including supporting and contributing to this place.

Cheers.

Uhh.. I've been playing arcade games since like 1985.. that would have looked silly even back then. Sorry.

And as far as my cabinet goes.. I'm waiting until I have enough cash and time to do the project right, makes sense eh?
I've been looking at homebuilt arcade cabinets for 7 years (one shy of eight) and trust me, I was not in awe or would have been. :laugh2:

I don't see any reasons in my posts to doubt my own cabinet design skills
