touchscreen overlay VS dedicated touchscreen?

I'm going to build a touchscreen Jukebox, and wonder about opinions on the 2 types. Do the overlays work as well, or tend to peel off?

I have no idea but am in exactly the same boat as you here...
Hopefully we will get some useful advice. What I have noticed is that there a few touchscreen LCD available on E-bay occasionally that are actually modified LCDs with the overlay now incorporated as a retrofit.

Magic Touch, They are one of the best at touch screens. But I have found that
add on touch screens are fickle and if not moved around much they work some what OK. But if I was to do it again I would go with the real thing. My friend
has a real touch screen and it is a world of difference. Hope this info helps you out.

Thanks for the info. I see a bunch of surplus 10.4" Panasonic CF-VDL01 touchscreens from 1 ebay seller. They are intended for use with a Panasonic notebook. The manual, available for download from Panasonic shows the connections, and mentions Windows 95-2000, plus NT. Could this be used with a PC running XP if I provide the 15 volts DC for the monitor? The seller has 40 units, with a buy it now of $199 shipped, and has accepted some offers below that. Wonder how low they would go? Ebay item is 200011756498. I'm going to ask the seller about working condition, but I saw in their feedback, that somebody bought another item that didn't work, and it was replaced.

Does 800x600 so should work with XP.  You might want to ask what drivers are available for the touchscreen portion.

Thanks, I tried to find a website for the manufacturer (Norca), but had no luck. If there is no support, I'd be afraid to buy, although the price sure isn't bad.

What O/S Does it work under? If it works under win2k then it will work under XP i would have thought. Either way most jukebox software will run on win2k anyway...

Sorry about hijacking the original thread. 

I looked at an overlay before I purchased a dedicated touchscreen LCD on ebay.   On the dedicated LCD you cannot tell there is a touchscreen whereas the overlay ones all looked like add ons to me.  There was something not quite solid about them.

 All this info helps. It sounds like I'd be better off with a dedicated unit instead of an overlay. I'm now thinking that the Norca touch screen on ebay is made by Topvision. Their website doesn't list an OS, but says under plug and play that it's VESA DDC 1/2B compatible. A little research on google makes me think it would work with XP, but I'm not too sure.
 The Panasonic ones I mentioned on ebay run on Win 2000. Since that seller has at least 40 to sell, and has accepted offers, it's hard to say how low they would go. I generally don't make lowball offers, but maybe in this case it would be worth a try. Thanks again, you guys have been a great help.

Thoose notebook screens might not be so easy to cable up to a pc, i doubt i could do it... I am asuming they are like any other laptop lcd panels and if so they don't just have a vga conncetor on the end. It sounds like you know what you are doing but i think that is a little to much trouble for me.

Thanks Barcrest, unfortunately I'm no computer whiz, and just assumed it would plug right in. The manual say it's a 15 pin Dsub input, using analog RGB. I thought that was a standard PC type connection, but I didn't know that notebooks often use a different setup than a PC. If it requires more than a basic cable, and maybe a simple adapter, it's sure not the one for me.

I just received a 17" ELO touchscreen that I bought off of ebay for $45 shipped.  It is amazing.  Considering how expensive the overlays are for the lcd's, I am convinced this is the way to go.  It was a drop in style for a kiosk, so it has the nice plastic black bezel around it already.  It took all of 30 seconds to find the drivers on google by entering "ELO touchscreen drivers", and I was off and running.  Very impressive for the price.
