power off the pc...

ok im in a bit of a pickle here.
im building a mam cab for my unlce and his family.so im trying to make it as user friendly as possiable.
im always around my cab so if any screws up i can fix it..,but he not to much of a computer wiz so any promblems would be trouble..so if you dont mind i would like to ask a question that im really worried about..

i want it to make it as easy as possiable to power on and off the game, i got the power on part done,but its the powering of that scares me.he could just flip the switch to turn it "ALL OFF",but im worried that would damage windows the drivers for i-pac and etc...
is there a safe alternative for this?that my only concern.to make it safe for the os?
im just dreading that call my controls arnt working....lol

Run the PC on a permanently on 110v and then run the rest of power outlets going though a 12v relay switch.

That way when you power on the PC via the PC power button the whole system comes on and the same at shutdown



Power always on >>>>>>PC>>>>>>>>12v line to relay


Switched outlets turns on via relay>>>>>>monitor fans etc.....

A UPS with an auto shutdown software if power is cut...

Or a simple button to click on the panel to trigger a windows shutdown...

All you do is shutdown the pc as normal as soon as the pc goes off the 12v is cut to the relay as its all off.

Another thing you can do is tap into the power on button wire on your pc and run wires out of the pc up to a startard arcade button. If you have this all you have to do is press the button once to turn on and again to start the pc shutting down.

Or go into the BIOS on the PC and the Power Options section in Control Panel, go into Advanced and set "When I press the power button my computer:" Shut Down then just use a switch wired to the PC to turn the cab off and on (this assumes you are then running your monitor, speaker and lights off of a Smart Switch.

You don't have to go into the BIOS as these settings are in Windows. I assume you meant Windows anyway since you used terms like Control Panel.

My system boots to the directly FE (I'm using MaLa). When I exit the FE, it shuts down the PC. I'm sure most FE's have that feature.

I have never gone into the Bios myself it just works on the pc's that I have setup.

Actually I meant both, because I know alot of MAME user use old machines and there is the chance his might not be ASPCI 2.0 compliant, in which case he would need to make the changes in the BIOS instead of Windows.

Plus I tend to change my BIOS because I hate that "hold the power button in for five seconds to force a power-off" that is the factory default.

Basically just wanted to make it clear that there are options in both places that can affect the behavior he's looking to achieve.
