Strange paint sticky problem??
« on: July 22, 2006, 06:51:38 am »
Have painted my cab with a roller with basic Indoor wood or metal paint, Satin Black. But have notice that even after the paint have been dry for 5 or 6 hours that if i leave a flat side sitting down some where it shall stick itself to what ever it has come in contacted with. In this case it was my CP box, had painted the bottom of the CP box the day before, and left the CP box actally sitting on my cab, came down the next morning to paint the rest of the CP, and the base of the CP and stuck itself to the Cab, it came apart pritty easy, so wasnt stuck stuck to it, just when i did prise it apart it took a layer of paint of. Now on the tin for the paint it say that its touch dry within a hour, i had left the CP a whole 24 hours, so it cant be that the paint isnt dry could it?? Anybody else ever had a problem like this???

If it's oil I've noticed it sometimes can take a little of 24 hours. Also depends on how thick of a coat you use.

Read the label about curing times, etc. For latex, it may take as little as 15 minutes to be dry to the touch, but several days to fully cure.

Same with oil. When I use oil, I usually assume about a week to fully cure... about 24 hours to be dry to the touch.

nah its not oil based paint, im guessing its water based, as it says to clean all equipment out with soapy water after use. It says on the Tin is hsouldbe dry in 1-2 hours, just cant understand why it would stick to stuff 24 hours later. Also the surface seems really easy to scratch too, and leaves a mark on the paint work

I used Behr Semi-Gloss paint and have the same issue.  All the paint on mine is somewhat tacky, but nothing seems to damage it too easily.  Not sure why this is, but it doesn't bother me too much.

So, yes it happens to me; no, I don't know why nor how to fix it :)

Alot of it depends on how much humidity is in the air when it is drying. That was alot of the reason I moved all my pieces into my house and down in the basement, where they are in the air conditioning. They dry ALOT better than they were outside.

I had the same problem with my paint.  I let it dry for one week in the garage in AZ.  The humidity is generally low here, but it is a little higher here now.  It got much better when I brought the cab inside.  However, after two weeks it is still sticky.  I used Behr paint also.  I didn't have this problem with the primer at all.

I have the same problem with the paint i used for my cab.  It too was a water based black color.

Even after months it is still sticky, espeically to itself (under lid of control panel etc)  The fella at the paint store basically told me it could be to do with the color.  The black dye they actually put in the paint to make it black never dries, it is the paint that does.  The blacker the paint the longer to dry as it means more dye added.

Hopefully after time it will dry better

good luck...

Putting a clear coat on it should also help eliminate alot of those issues for you, I would think.

This is one reason that I always recommend oil based paints. They take a few days to dry, but they're rock hard after they do.
