The empty Cabinet I picked up today (pics inside!)
« on: July 20, 2006, 12:51:20 am »
Here's the cabinet I picked up today. I was very happy to find out that it has a coin door. Too bad the monitor mounts won't fit a 27" monitor. Well, here's the pics:

The front:

The back:

The side:

Inside:

It looks like it was an old NBA Jam cabinet:

The monitor mounts:

The front of the coin door:

The Bottom coin door:

The control panel housing (there is no top):

Inside the coin doors:

There seems to be a counter inside the bottom coin door (not sure about it):

And there's even a coin bucket!

So my main question is this: What is the best way to repaint this? It's particle board, so I don't want to mess it up. I got some bondo to repair the various nics and scratches, but I wanted to ask you guys. Thanks!

I found an NBA Jam machine on the side of a curb during spring clean-up week. I was lucky enough though that the only thing wrong with it was a fried power supply and had everything else, but the outside of the cab was in about the same condition yours was. I patched up the holes and the small chunks that were missing with wood putty, then sanded the entire cab down. I then put primer on all the sides, then sanded with 220 grit, then primed again. I used flat black for the back and top of the cab, and a high gloss for the front and sides. Rustoleum oil-based gloss paint is what i used and that worked fine.

Good luck on the cab.

I got a similar cabinet that had a full-length decal that covered each side in its entirety.  I removed the decal and exposed the bare particle board.  I just sanded with a random orbital sander, then primed, sanded, primed again with KILZ2.  Then 2 coats of Rustoleum semi-gloss black latex-based paint.   Looks pretty good, came out better than I thought it would.

Good to hear. Anyone have any ideas where I can get monitor mounts? The ones in the cab fit a 25" monitor and I'm looking to get a 27" Betson to go in here. Thanks!

Bump about the monitor mounts... (maybe I should just start a new thread?)

1up used to sell universal ones, I think. Give him a pm...

PM

Here's the link to his brackets:

At the very least, it shouldn't be too hard to fabricate a set, looking at his picture.

You have a Coin Controls coin door and lower access door. That is a coin counting meter in the cutout slot in the lower door. The cabinet is wired Jamma too.

I also have the exact same coin door and bottom door in mine with the relay counter, but my bottom door is bent pretty bad. Probably someone trying to grab the coin bucket inside when the machine was sitting on the curb. I would have liked to hook up the counter again to see how many people have put coins in the machine, unfortunatly, they can't be reset back to zero. I'm planning on replacing the doors anyway with a 4-coin slot.

If you want i can give you the dimmensions for the missing top control panel on your cab, unless you plan on replacing the whole thing.

Are you going to MAME it? or restore it back to nba jam?

I noticed that there are black and red wires coming out from under where the counter is. I also noticed the wires in the back, but the only thing they are connected to is a power switch on the top.

I'd love those dimmensions for the control panel top, if you could send them my way that'd be great. I'm going to MAME it, I have most of the parts already. Can I use the coin doors that are already there? They came with two coin mechs, and a wire harness. I'd love to use it, but I don't know what the wire diagrams for it are. Do you have them? Thanks!

The top control panel is 37''inches by 13.5''inches, and the width is the same as the sides of the control panel. The corners also are rounded off.

As far as the coin panel, yes you can re-use it. You'll need an ipac to interface it with the computer (along with the rest of your buttons & joysticks). The ipac2 has a spot for 2 coin mech wiring. It's extremely easy to interface as long as the coin mech is intact including the coin switch at the bottom. Just make sure it's grounded properly by daisy-chainning the common grounds together and then to the ipac. If you want the lights to go on for the coin inserts, you'll need a 12v source to supply power to them. I just hacked up some molex wires from the pc and used the yellow and black wires to provide 12v to it from the pc power supply.

The red and black wires heading towards the coin counter are the ones that provide a very brief instant of power that triggers the counter, mine i think was rated at 24volts. If you want to try hooking it up, just do a search here on "coin counters" as this topic has been covered more indepth there. I believe it has schematics for hooking one up in a mame cab. If you don't want to bother with all that, just toss it. It's not required for operation.

That switch on top of the cab (kinda obvious) is the main power switch. Supposed to turn on the marquee light, transformer on the bottom of the cab ->monitor, & suppling power to the 15amp psu which in turn powers the jamma board. For mame'ing, i just have that switch power on the computer by using a smart strip power strip (say that 10 times fast), which then turns on the marquee light & transformer/monitor.

Sweet, thanks for all the info! So the Coin Door has a connection like this:

I don't have an IPAC2, just a regular IPAC (had it from my old control panel). Are there schematics for this so I know which wire is what?

Another question: did you remove the t-molding before painting your cab? If so, what was the best way to remove it? Thanks again for the help.

Yeah, that looks like the coin door jamma connector. Same on mine.

If you go to ultimarc's website you should be able to get a pinout of your ipac. The jamma cable wiring should be pretty self explanitory as it should be labled on the wire itself if you still have it.

Yeah, i removed the t-molding before i painted as i was going to replace it with blue t-molding anyway. It's really easy to remove, just find the end of it, and just pull on it. It comes out fairly easily.
