Author Topic: Painting in AZ heat = terrible job (Read 3209 times)

So, today I came home and began painting my 3rd coat with Rustoleom black satin. I started by sanding down my second coat with 400 grit sandpaper ( I have been going through 220 - 320 and now 400) Man this thing was looking smooth as glass.

To make a long story short don't paint in the heat! The temp outside was at least 113 today and in the garage probably even more. I would roll on a layer and by the time I rewet my roller it was beginning to dry on me. Now this thing has roller streaks all over the place. Not to mention the paint is thicker in areas than others. Then to top it off 2 flys landed in my tackey dry surface...

Looks like I will be sanding back down to the 220.

I had to actually move my cabinet indoors to paint for that very reason. I'm still not doing a great job, but at least it's for a totally different reason.

Yeah, on my first coat, I made the mistake of trying to paint outside too. Sand and repaint my friend. Paint in your garage at night. For like 2 bucks you can get some .4 mil plastic sheeting and make a little paint booth. Will it keep all dust and bugs out, no, but it will keep most of em out if you are cafeful not to go in and out a lot.

Check out This Post You will see my paint booth. I live in Georgia and there are LOTs of bugs and Pollen. I only had 2 bug incidents, and it was mostly my fault for keeping the front flap of the paint room open. I say mostly a wreckless flying I am sure had something to do with it.

I know what you mean - I painted all of the closet doors in the house this past weekend and I brought each one outside to lay flat and so the fumes wouldn't bother the baby. It was hovering around 100 and they didn't come out as nice as they should have... Oh well.

It's weird up until about 4 years ago I was the same.. Couldn't stand the extreme heat. Now I'm right at home anywhere from 100-115. I'm just one of those strange desert rats. Just don't put me anywhere cold. I practically need a jacket to go to the movie theater in the summer.

Anyway, the cab is smooth again. Sanded back down with 220 grit this afternoon. I plan to do my painting from now either late at night or crack of butt dawn. Good thing I installed all of that fluorescent shop lighting.

I just finished painting my cab in Tucson and had similar problems. If only I could have painted it in the winter. It didn't come out smooth, but I was able to sand it down with my finish sander. However, I started to notice that it made a nice very slight texture (which I left on the cab with the final 2 coats). What I found to help out was to mix in a small amount of floetrol and especially water. I added the floetrol to the can, but I add water to the paint tray. My paint looked blue when wet and black when dry, so when it started to turn black, I just added more water and stirred.

Also, I could never get the paint (no problems with the primer) to fully dry until I moved the cab in the house.

I'm using oil based paint, however I am wishing I would have went the latex route more and more. Latex is far more foregiving...

Sadly enough since moving to the Phoenix area I have put the painting aspect of my projects on hold until November due to the heat. It hit 118 two days ago...

Yeah... I walked outside after work (Right next to SKy Harbor Airport) and I thought I was gonna fall over, lol. Plus there was a breeze blowing, which makes you feel like you're in a convection oven.

Since I'm not a paint expert, I need to ask: Besides not creating a mess, is there a major advantage to painting outdoors? I mean, the cab, I assume, will be indoors when it's done. Why not just bring it in early, lay down some plastic (and make a plastic enclosure too if you don't want dust everywhere), crack a few windows and paint it then? We all paint our walls/ceiling at some point, why not the cab?

I was originally going to paint outdoors but I envisioned too many problems. Besides weather (humidity and rain), there's the chance wind might blow debris onto the freshly painted surface or a bug will decide to rest in it.

No advantage that I can think of.. I am actually in the garage since I have been sanding in between all of my coats. Makes a huge mess.

Besides, my wife as cool as she has been with this whole cab.... Bringing it in to paint might drive her over the edge!!

Personally, I agree with doing the painting indoors. You have MUCH better climate control. Biggest thing to do is handle the dust. I surrounded my work area in hanging plastic. When I was using 220 grit (primer stages) I opened a window and pointed a fan out it. Once I moved to 400 grit (finish/clear coat), the fan wasn't nessicary.

And always wear a respirator mask when sanding, especially at 220 grit, that kicks up a TON of dust. If you ever doubted the need to wear a mask, check the below pic-its a side-by-side of a new mask and the one I wore during the sanding (which was 3 runs at 220 and 2 at 400).

I would help, but my wood working ended with the cab. I had Knievel build my CPT for me.. I highly recommended it! His work and detail is well worth the money/blood/sweat and tears!

I live in Mohave Valley...better known as HELL. Its been in the 120's so far and I've had to put off all projects until Fall. As a pro painter in the area I can offer a few tips.

!. If using oilbase products - use Penetrol as an additive, it will help it flow much better and keep it from drying too fast.

2. If using Waterbase (Latex) - Use Flotrol

3. Paint before 10:00 or after 10:00

I can't wait either.. I've been working on this thing primarly on weekends since Feb.. Seems like it will never be done.

I've been doing all of my painting in the wee hours of the am and the results are much better..

I tried to paint as well, but was not happy with the results.
I am, however, very pleased with the look of laminate on my project. It is nearly bullet proof and easy to keep clean. Slightly more work to apply though

you could put a light coating of sand on the cab in the morning. Leave it outside all day. Bring it back in at night and you should have a glass covered cab. (MYX random thought of the day)

Wow there really are a lot of Arizonites out there. I had no idea. I'm in Chandler and work at a large semiconductor company. I gave up and making a complete cab and just have a desktop controller.

You are very welcome. I run a paint company in the valley, and believe me you cant just stop painting because of the heat. If you did you would be out of business.
