How to mount hard drive and cd drive in cocktail cab?
« on: July 18, 2006, 02:53:59 pm »
I want to mount my CD and hard drive in my cab but I am not sure just how to mount these things. I know that it should be shock protected so should I mount them on some soft foam. Would that create a heat issue? Should I mount them on some rubber legs? I Just dont know what would be best. I do know that they sell racks but would both types of drives fit?

I looked at some other cabs and they used external drives but I already have all the parts to my computer.

I used velcro strips.  Works like a charm and there's nothing to unscrew if you need to do some maintenance...

If you can take it out, just use the hard drive cage from your PC case.

I know that it should be shock protected

Does it need to be more shock mounted than it is in your PC?

I dont have a PC case to use.

I really like the velcro idea. Do you think the heat from the drives makes the glue get gooey.

I just took a couple of small metal squares and bent them drilled holes in them and screwed them to the drives and cab. Both the HD and the CD drives have threaded holes on the sides
Like Burt Reynolds!!

I don't think so... at least not yet.  I'm not finished but I have had it running for at least 2 hours during one stretch of software tweaking and didn't notice any problems.  It's cool as a cucumber in there ... or something.  Check out currygoat's cocktail here:  http://home.comcast.net/~currygoat55/  I've been using his website as a reference guide while building mine - he gave me the idea for the velcro... although he does mount the hard drive using an old Xbox jewel case... hmm...

I bought some metal rails, meant for adding a harddrive into a 5.25" drive bay.
NO MORE!!

Get some pipe strapping.  You can bend it to fit your drives and it's got holes all over the stuff so you can even throw a screw and a washer in on the side to keep it all together, then screw it down to a side or the bottom of the cocktail.  Here's a pic of what the stuff looks like, and it'll prolly be sold in the plumbing or electrical department of your local hardware store.

That's the same stuff I used - for my drives and power supply. Works great!

This is funny because I have tons of this stuff left over from hanging new gas pipe undrer my house.

First time I didnt have to buy something.

I think I will use the srew and washer deal to hook up the drive to the metal strap then velcro the metal strap to the cab.

Thanks guys.
