Any decent Trackball Games?
« on: July 14, 2006, 01:27:28 pm »
I am in the process of building a dedicated trackball arcade cabinet, and  was wondering what games are compatible with the trackball, or that I should definitely include?  I will be using a Golden Tee Fore control panel.  The Control panel has a trackball and 5 buttons.
Here is a sample pic on the Arcade Art website, to show the button layout for those not familiar with it.

http://www.localarcade.com/arcade_art/details.php?image_id=804&mode=search

I started a list below, on the games I have been told are compatible with trackballs.  The ones in Blue are the ones other users have recommended as "must haves".   Are there any other Mame games, PC games, or emulated console games, that use a trackball that I should also include?

Thanks.

The list of games that can be played with a trackball I found so far are:

MAME GAMES

Some of those games are great. Some don't work. Some aren't worth playing at all.

Something to keep in mind is some of those games had more than 1 trackball.

Marble Madness used 2 trackballs
Rampart had a 3 trackball version of their game

The three games that would be must-haves to me, that are not highlighted so far are:

Crystal Castles
Irritating Maze
Quantum (similar to Tempest, but uses a trackball)

What shape cabinet are you building?  Will it be a  Centipede shaped cabinet? or something else?

Anyway, try these games:

Wacko!!!  It uses a trackball and a 4-way joystick.  On my trackball control panel, I just use my admin buttons, which are set up as cursor keys (up, down, left, right)

Also, "Kick" which I remember it was called "Kickman" in the arcade that I went to.  It uses Left and Right only trackball (normal trackball works great) and one button.  It features a funny clown on a unicycle that pedals back and forth, and balloons fall from the top of the screen and he has to try to collect them on his head.  If he misses a balloon, he can kick it back up to the top and then catch it when it comes back down.

Don't forget Millipede!!! And also "Arcade Classics (prototype)" which could be described as Missile Command Deluxe and Centipede Deluxe???

Birdie King is really cute.  Cool music on it.

Enjoy... ;D

If your not already aware of this site give it a try.  There are some pretty cool games on their if you look around.  While they are remakes they put a new face on many of the classics.  Quite a few use mouse inputs which could be used by the trackball.  I have 50-75 of them on my cabinet and play them quite offen.

???I guess it might have helped if I had shared my control panel configuration.  I'm going to be using a Golden Tee Fore! control panel on a free cabinet I got.  I still have to mod the cabinet.  The Control panel has a trackball and 5 buttons.

Thanks for all of the input so far.

One that's not on the list, but is a must-have is Major Havoc.
It has a spinner that looked like a skateboard wheel poking up through the CP, but will play well enough with a trackball that I'd include it in the list of must-haves.

I agree with many of the selections, but I noticed two that I know some people love:

Shuuz
Tehkan World Cup

Personaly, Shuuz isn't my type (but neither are golf games [shrug]).

I like both Tehkan and Atari Soccer, but AS needs two players, as in: if you play by youself, the other team just stands there, and is better on a head-2-head cocktail cap (with the 4.5" trackballs) than a standup cab.
Tehkan's much better all around, but I really like the simplicity of AS for some reason.

Does the Atari Baseball and Atari Football also need two players like Atari Soccer?

Atari Baseball, No.

Atari Football, yes, but only 3/4 as much as soccer.  You can almost play while on the offence as only one of the other team is standing, but when you're defense, the QB just stands there with the ball.
