Player One Button - Help!
« on: July 04, 2006, 09:05:22 pm »
I built my cab about 3 years ago, haven't really played it for a year.  I just moved last month, now we have a nice big 2 car garage to put my cab in, so I cleaned it up, fired it up, and of course I immediately faced problems (buttons sticking, wires came loose, etc.)  I fixed most, but one thing I can't figure out, and I need help on, is that I can no longer use my Player 1 button to do all the secondary control things it used to do.  I'm using Mame32 on a Windows 98 Pentium system.  When I first boot up the machine and Windows starts to run, I get a keyboard error message.  Unplugging the keyboard I have hooked up to my IPAC takes care of that, but I looked at the keyboard and it doesn't appear that any of the keys are sticking.  Anyway, the real problem is that when I try to hold down Player 1 and use it in conjunction with, for example, Player 2 to exit a game, or Player 1 Switch 1 to get a game credit, it just doesn't work.  When I'm on the game selection screen in Mame, and I try to select a game with Player 1 and Joystick 1 Left, it just jumps to the beginning of the menu.  I went into Notepad in Windows and held down my Player 1 button.  It just types "1" but doesn't repeat.  Is it supposed to repeat when I hold it down?  Is that the problem?  How can I fix this?  I don't know if more info is needed to help me out, if I need to supply more, please let me know.  Right now this is only a minor annoyance, as I can still play games by accessing the keyboard I have hooked up to select games, exit and to get credits.  It would be nice to fix, tho.  Thanks!

I would guess that player 1 button got miss wired during the fixing.  Please check that the wires are going to the "COM" and "NO" tabs on the switch.

Since you say it hasn't been turned on in a year I would guess your ipac lost its programming. Try getting the legacy programming util from here http://www.ultimarc.com/download.html and reprogramming your shift keys.

Question: can you still use the joysticks and fire buttons ?
If so, this sounds like a sticking button to me. Somehow one of the buttons or joystick connections seems to be permenantly activated (shorted).

 :banghead:

That's it exactly.  I feel like such a fool.  Thanks everyone that read this and offered help.

I found a stuck microswitch on the Player 2 side.  Switch 5.  One I never use, so didn't notice it was stuck.  Left it grounded and simply disconnected it from the NO and Voila!  Everything works fine now.  Now to order some more microswitces.

No one need reply to this thread anymore.  All problems solved.  On a personal note, I am a happy, happy boy again now that my Mame Cabinet is up and running!!!
