Adobe Photoshop
« on: July 04, 2006, 08:29:48 pm »
I've got the 30-day free trial going.  I'm slowly working through it but for the life of me cannot figure out how to cut a piece out of a picture.  I downloaded the original Donkey Kong flyer and want to cut a portion out.  I can break it up using the slice tool but I cannot remove it from the original picture.  It has to be something simple that I'm just not doing.  Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Oh man, there are so many things to learn with PS. Overall , I would say it took about a year for me to master the software, and that was when it was it simple, PS4.  :banghead: Every version they've added new features with bells & whistles that make it even harder for the newcomer to catch on to.

I know this for sure, there are tons, and I mean tons of PS tutorials on the web. I would google a few sites and pick up some quick tips to get started. For starters , I would use the magnetic lasso. Then you can get on to using masking.  ;D

I looked up a website for you, and you might just find something useful there. It's a little hard to try and tell someone to do this , or do that, when you're on a message board. Best thing to do is try first hand some of the online tutorials.

Sorry if I wasn't much help.  :-\

Thanks  :).  Yes, I can imagine that it could take that long to master the program.  I seem to be doing okay with it and have been able to answer most of my own questions / problems.  For some reason I have been stuck on the problem I originally posted for.  It seems like it shoud be as easy as cut and paste but I guess not.  I will try the provided site and hopefully figure out how to cut out the artwork I want.  Thanks again.

Try creating a duplicate layer of the image.  Hide the original layer and then work on the duplicate.  That should do the trick.  I used the magnetic select tool for a lot of the images that I pull things out of.  If you need something more specific, I can give it a shot for you if you send me the image.

Before you can copy, you have to select what you want to copy. Use the rectangular selection tool, the lasso tool, or the magic wand to select the thing you want to copy. Then you can copy it and paste it where you want it. Selections can also be dragged around the layer in which they reside.

I can not help that much either, but I can direct you to a website called Pixel2Life, which helped me out a lot.  It has a huge amount of tutorials for various programs.  Just click on the Adobe Photoshop tab on the left.

Hope this helps.

have the flyer open and your project open..... use the magnetic laso to trace out what you want then switch to the black triangle tool (forget what it's called and don't have photoshop on this PC) and drag what you just traced out over to your project.... it'll create a new layer for it.... then posistion it exactly whare you want it......
