Question about NOS Atari Missile Command buttons..
« on: July 03, 2006, 06:00:45 pm »
Bought one of these...

http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6281062764&ssPageName=MERC_VIC_ReBay_Pr4_PcN_BIN_Stores_IT

20$ / 3 buttons... without the cones...

Do these buttons fit on both types of cones? (Tall/short)?

Yes.  Both tall and short use the same button.  They attach to the CP differently though.

You expected a reply after only 2 hours and 24 minutes?

Missile command uses the medium cones. I don't know if tall will fit those. But MinerAl says they will...
NO MORE!!

Yup! :)

I saw my post going further and further down the post list, and people reading it but nobody replied... So I wondered :)

So for a metal CP, with those buttons I bought, which cones would work for sure?

Thanks,

Marc

I *believe* that all heights of cones will work fine (I have tall cones and my switches look just like yours) and based on Art's cone/switch pages, it seems that way.

Too bad about your timing .. a few days ago you could have saved yourself some $$$ with the "cone wars" going on.

Cheers.

Cone wars?

There are/were three different vendors of repro cones and they had a bit of a price war last week. Seems to be sorted now, but was interesting to watch.

Cheers.

The tall cones are tall because the whole threaded shaft of the button assembly screws tight to the bottom of the CP (sort of, there is the adjustment nut on the threaded neck...).

The short cones bolt to the CP and then the buttons screw up into them only as far as is necessary to clear the top of the cone.

The CP holes for the tall cones only have to be big enough for the neck of the button, the CP holes for the short cones have to be a larger diameter, because the short cones also have a neck that must go through the CP.

If you are trying to figure out which cone to use on a stock Atari CP, just stick a button neck in the hole and wiggle it.  If there is a lot of play, it's meant to have short cones.  If it's pretty tight, it's supposed to have tall cones.

No actually, it's for a multi purpose control panel (4way/spinner/trackball) and I wanted small footprint buttons...

So I'd be better off with the low cones I guess..
