Possible to use oil based primer over oil paint?
« on: June 29, 2006, 01:18:57 am »
Last weekend I began the first coat of Rustoleom black satin and in general I am not happy with the results. I am trying to achive a slight texture however,  I over sanded the primer in some spots (too smooth). The results are 70% of the cab looks great with a slight texture but, has blotches of mirror smooth here and there.  :(

Is it possible to apply another coat of oil Kilz primer over the 1st coat (after a light sanding) or will I need to sand off the 1st coat of Rustoleom entirely?

I am not an expert, but  would think applying more primer after sanding would be just fine.  The sanding part would be important though.

I had to do this on my Ms. Pacman as I did not take the advice to prime first. I used exactly that, rustolium Satin black. I sanded it then used the rustolium grey primer, sanded, primer, sanded, then did the satin black again. It looked great and so far I have seen no issues.

I stuck with the same brand through the whole thing. I don't think that it mattered as long as it was oil, but did not know for sure. So, they also got my business when I started my MAME cab.

Thanks guys... I'm begining to think it might be possible to just take the roller and apply another coat of primer to just the spots that are too smooth. I could then sand them down by hand to match the texture of the rest of the cab. Might be easier? Anyone have any thoughts or opinions on doing something like this?

Talked to my Dad and he is going to come over Saturday with his paint sprayer. I'm just not satisfied with the rollers. Everytime I put a coat on I almost end up sanding it right back down to the dang primer. As hard as I try I just can't get it right.
Anyone have some last minute sprayer advice. I've never used one before.

Sprayers have a pretty significant learning curve-you would think it would be easy, but there's alot of practice needed to learn exactly how fast to move the gun to get full coverage while avoiding drips and runs. If your dad has any amount of previous usage on the gun and you don't, I'd really recommend letting him do it for you.

As for the problems with the rollers...I can't see why you're having that many issues, as long as you don't soak down the roller, they're pretty hard to mess up. What kind of nap rollers are you using? For a project like this, you should be using 1/4" nap (often listed as "for smooth surfaces").

Yep 1/4 nap foam roller.
They way I have been doing it may the issue then. I have been soaking it pretty significantly and then attempting to spread the paint from the middle to the outside edges to form a light coat over the entire cab. The results are 60% of the cab comes out nice and smooth while the areas were the paint is thinner tend to be rough. However if I apply more paint to those areas then it is too thick.

I believe you want to use something like this.  This is not the exact brand I used, but the one I used worked like magic!

Yeah, that's probably it-you need to get the roller in the paint, get it covered, and then roll off most of the excess on the bumpy part of the roller pan-there shouldn't be very much paint at all on the roller when you actually head to the piece. What grit sandpaper are you using to smooth?
