wallmount jukebox - i need a portable stand - any ideas??
« on: June 28, 2006, 08:07:16 am »
since my jukebox cab is wall mounted and i need it portable for uni (presentations and all) I need to build a portable stand, and besides i am renting so i cant go putting holes in the wall :(

atm it rests back on a pole that is hinged to the back of the cabinet like so:

but this is flimsy to say the least and cant live on my desk forever, its time it went into the lounge !!

what i would really like is a pair of extendable poles that stretch from the floor to the ceiling, nice and portable, no holes in the wall, and take up practically no floor space

anybody spotted these things or similar for a reasonable price?? the only similar thing i can find is the 'dancing' poles which are way to expensive and are overkill for what i need.

or if anyone has an idea for a portable/rent friendly stand I'm all ears!!

Home centers in the US have a selection of adjustable aluminum poles that are used to open and close skylights.

They are strong and lightweight.

You could put rubber "feet" on the top and bottom of the poles to protect the floor and ceiling, then extend them and tighten.

Man, them Ikea ones seem kinda expensive.  You would need two, or just one??

I got an idea.  Have you ever seen a shower curtain rod, the adjustable kind that is spring loaded??  That would work pretty good, but I think they are only about 4-5 feet long.  So, we gotta extend it while retaining that spring-loaded adjustability.

Use one of those shower rods, and find a piece op pipe (metal or PVC) that the shower rod JUST barely slides into (for a nice tight fit).  Drill one hole in the shower curtain rod, and several holes in the pipe.  Now, you can slide the shower rod into the pipe, and put a pin through it when you get to an acceptable height,  Let the spring loaded mechanism take up the slack, and voila!!

Take a look at my Paint skills:

They got rubber feet on both ends to protect the walls in your shower.  The rubber feet are now protecting your floor and ceiling!

Get it?
Whaddya think?

How about a cargo bar like the kind used to secure a load in a pick-up truck like this

That one might not be long enough but I work on tractor trailers for a living and I know some of those extend to around 10 ft.

that cargo bar looks great providing i could get one long enough, and the price is certainly better.

and fat-johnny i was thinking of building one myself and somthing like a shower pole to modify is a great idea! i think ill go for a browse at the hardware store over the weekend.

after work im going to search for the cargo bar, see if i can find one here in australia.

thanks heaps guys
