Car Sterio Amp "on" question
« on: June 26, 2006, 09:33:28 pm »
Hey all,
I have decided to use and have purchased an car stereo amp and speakers for my cab. My amp apparently only turn on if the reciever is on. The thing is that I am not using a car reciever, the sound is coming from the computer. On the power input there is a screw for the traditional +12, Gnd, and then there is one marked remote. Now being a tinkerer I did not want to take no for an answer, so I tried taking the remote to ground and nothing happened. Then I tried +12 to the remote and it worked. My fear is that what ever the circuit is may be getting too much voltage. Does anyone know about car amps and how the reciever function is and how much voltage it wants to see.

I did not do this for long for fear of doing damage. It is currently disconnected.

A car amp remote turn on is 12V, at like 5 milliamps.  Any 12V switch/source should work, as long as you aren't pulling any amps.  If you are worried about too many amps, put a small in line fuse to protect the amp.

Ditto......

It is the other +12V that will be drawing the amperage.

Ok so the incoming 12v can be put into the +12 in and loop out of that into the remote. Correct?

That connection will work, however what kind of wattage are we talking? Make sure to get a dedicated power supply just for the amp, and to match or exceed its output to what the amp requires.

yep. I do not know if you remember the conversation about the computer PS being used for the power for the amp. It is working like a charm!!!  :D

The hook up was actually very easy.

mameworld.com has some great info on this but I cant seem to locate it at the moment for a direct link. So just try digging around on that site and you will find it. ;D
