Echo...echo...echo
« on: June 25, 2006, 08:15:21 pm »
For some reason, Mame is echoing on this old system I have it set up on. It's trying to play all of the sounds twice. I have a feeling that some parameter or other is messed up, but I don't know where to begin. Any ideas?

sounds like a potential audio driver issue. find the most current driver for your audio hardware uninstall the currrent and install the new.

Do you have -wavwrite set?

I have changed my nickname to "Cakemeister". Please do not PM the Buddabing account because I do not check it anymore.

Please read the wiki!

Are the games playing slightly slow? This is a classic symptom of a PC that's too slow for the version of MAME you're running.

No, I don't think I have wavwrite set. Some games are running slow, some are running just fine. On the slow ones, the sound always seems to stutter.

Yep,
jump down to a much earlier version of mame and see if you have the same problem

PS...
You are running Win ME right (YUK x 10000000000000) I would jump backwards and use 98SE before I used that.
Anyway.....and other than that what are you using:
What Processor?
Memory?
Mame version?

If I can get my hands on an earlier version, I will. Seems that all I have are old versions of Mame32...

Here's the breakdown:

OS: Win ME (ME, XP and 95 are my only choices right now)
Mame: Mame32 v104, running through MaLa.
Memory: I'll have to check - let's call it 128 megs to be safe.
CPU: Intel Pentium 300 Mhz.
ATI Rage graphics card.
Soundblaster sound card (have to check to see what kind)
Dell motherboard

I'm going to turn off the sounds on MaLa to see if that makes a difference.

Oddly enough, I expereinced an identical problem with Mame32 v.104 on a 1gig machine, but I don't remember how I finally managed to fix it.

Some things to try:
command line version of mame
Mame32 not using mala

Sounds to me like the machine may not be totally up to snuff. I used a p2350 and had nothing but problems with it. Multiple key presses caused beeping, sounds not playing right, etc. I "fixed" the problem with a different computer.

CPU: Intel Pentium 300 Mhz.

There's your problem right there.  Find some lower CPU intensive games like Pac-Man.

Or Space Invaders? Cause I'm getting the double sounds in there, too. Robotron, on the other hand, plays just fine. I'm boggled.

Seriously, I'm due to get a faster machine (a freebie) but I can't get a straight answer on when it will arrive.

All the old versions can be found here:

http://www.mame.net/oldmame.html

Read the text at the top of the page as there isn't links for all versions. But all versions are kept at that site its just a case of http://www.mame.net/zips/mame???b.zip replace the questions marks with the old version you want.  eg 087

Thanks. Downgrading to 087 speeds things up a lot. I just need to figure out how to hide mame's DOS window when it starts the game and I'll be set!

Betcha got artwork enabled.  Turn it off and tell me how it's playing.

Robotron doesn't take much horsepower, I don't know why.  I've got all the Williams classics running on my horizontal cab.  All that has is an AMD 450.
