X-arcade 3rd party usb adapter?
« on: June 24, 2006, 07:24:02 am »
X-Arcade is sold out of the USB adapters with no ETA of when they'll get more in.  I'm wondering if anyone else has used a 3rd party usb adapter and it work properly.

right now i'm using a belkin ps2 to USB Y splitter for ps2 keyboard and mouse adapter but it doesn't work correctly.  If i hold a button or joystick direction down it works for a few seconds and then stops.  I'd have to let the controler go and then push in that direction again.  When i tested it in notepad i noticed it would repeat the keyboard press for about 5-7 times then stop repeating the key.

When i bought my x-arcade a few  years ago, i ordered the usb adaptor as well as all the console adaptors.  but when it arrived, the usb adaptor was missing...when i called them, they sent me one, but it is a generic one.  it is beige, has two ps2 ports, one for keybaord and one for a mouse.  I had not used it until just recently when i decided to build my first cabinet.  But i noticed that same problem where if i hold one button, it quits working after a few seconds until i either release it, or press another button.  I thought it was just a limitation of the x-arcade interface.

looks like i'll have to hook mine up through ps2 and see if that problem goes away.

sorry i cant help you, but thank you for bringing this to my attention.

exactly,  and its very difficult to find any information online about the USB adapter for the X-arcade.  Maybe if anyone else can contribute maybe this thread may be able to help others like us having this problem

the usb adapters I have tried so far that I can purchase locally are:
Belkin, APC, and Radio shack Y adpaters that let you hook up both a PS/2 mouse and keyboard to the usb port, all with the same results of repeated key presses then stops.
I also have tried the PS/2 to USB adapter that comes with microsoft keyboards and also the radioshack single PS/2 to USB adapter and they do not work at all

I managed to find some info from other websites that 2 other adapters have worked for them but I have not been able to test them.  One is made by Maxxtro and the other by Y-Mouse

I bought my XArcade a few months ago and it worked fine with my old PC plugged in directly.  Worked great until I upgraded my PC / mobo, then it no longer functioned.  When I contacted XArcade that told me I need the adapter and they were out and said they wouldn't be in for over a month and their ETA was not reliable.  I ended up buying that EXPENSIVE 3rd party part, but I must say that it works GREAT!  I tried to research an alternative, but couldn't find anything.

btw, I was really put off by the XArcade guys when they told me that usually you don't need it.  From what I've heard the majority do, so why don't they include it or design it that way from the beginning (I know it is universal and also fits some consol games).  $140 for the Control Pad and $50 for that stupid adaptor.  What a rip-off!!!!

Fry's, the huge electronics store, sells x-arcade controls and has plenty of the usb adapters.  See if there is a store near you.

I think they are going the direction of having both options included.  I tested their beta USB/PS2 (with a different CPU board) combo a while back and it worked well.  Am guessing at some point in the future the new X-arcades will come that way.  Don't know what they plan to do about the current models.

The one i have is a Y-Mouse, and it suffers from that problem as well.  My cabinet is setup kinda stupid, i have a pc and a dreamcast in it, I use a KVM switch to switch the monitor back and forth, the kvm switch gets its power from the keyboard port on the PC, so that uses up my ps2 port for the x-arcade...it doesnt seem to function properply when i plug the x-arcade into the kvm switch.

The only black keyboard i have for in my cabinet was a usb keyboard, so I plugged it into usb, and the x-arcade through the usb adaptor. when i needed to program my x-aracde, i had a usb to ps2 adaptor on the passthrough port on the x-arcade and i would just plug the usb keyboard in to program it.  this worked fine, howerver if i left the keyboard plugged in, it seemed to mess with the controls.

so what i did  was connect the x-arcade to teh ps2 port on the pc, and plugged a ps2 keyboard into the x-arcade.   i plugged the kvm into the usb to ps2 adaptor so it still has power, so far so good....if i didnt explain this properly, i can include pics.

if you are having problems getting the x-arcade to work via ps2, make sure you have a ps2 keyboard plugged into the passthrough port on the x-arcade.
