Dreamcast question
« on: March 08, 2003, 11:33:48 am »
Ok, now that dreamcasts are being sold on ebay for 20 - 30 bucks.  I started thinking about adding one to my cabinet for real.

but the quests...

1) How many of the neomi games where ported?  Most?  How are the ports?

2)  Has anyone successfully hacked an analog controller yet?  I'm not sure if I can go for their steering wheels on a cabinet...

3)  How many games require/need an analog joystick for games?

4)  Can you do a button out that will work well for most games?  (ie, is there any button layouts that work well where all buttons are accessable by only one hand).

5)  Hate to say it... but I'm a little worried about access to software since they aren't producing any.  Anyone having trouble getting cds for them?  How about cdrs?

thanks

well, I can solve yer software doubt...eBay...there are tons of Dreamcast games for sale on eBay (most brand new) - also, lots of videogame stores still sell the games.

as for cdr's, most will read em, but, DC's made after a certain date (can't quite remember what...could be December 2001) won't read cdr's at all.

I had a DC a few years back, was a great little machine, totally regret selling it...and I had about 80 games on cdr's that all ran perfectly...

Most cps3 and naomi games are ported(i actually cant think of any game that are not ported).

Ports are about 99% arcade perfect...at times I liked dreamcast version.this goes for street fighter 3..i dont know..something is wrong with the arcade version..its just kinda slow(maybe its how the arcade set their machine).

Not many games force you to use analog..i mean baseball games requires analog but ya really wanna play baseball with arcade stick..pretty much useless.
Other that that..EVERY game I can think of uses digital(thats are supposed to be played with an arcade stick).

Just 6 button street figheter setup will do the trick for all the games.

There wont be any new game BUT there are plenty that will keep you busy..I MEAN..sooooooo many great games on DC..i honestly like dreamcast better then ps2 and x-box because dc has more arcadish type games then ps2 and x-box..freaging box suck so bad..its been collecting lot of dust lately.. :( >:(

I intend to hook my dreamcast upto my cab (cocktail) when I have it finished via a scart or bnc connector to allow selection between the ipac or a hacked dc pad

shame you cant rewire a DC to a ATAPI cdrom then you could abstract the dc from view ( I intend to leave soul caliber in most of the time and run a power switch out the outside of the cab)

i got the same onces..starfire..IF you have a rumble pack for dreamcast then you CAN have recoil on these guns..i know about those liksang guns(they look cool) but I just wanted to play and its all good.. :)

About steering wheels..i do not know how these can be hacked BUT you can always get the logitech steering wheels for ps2 then use converter so you can use the same one for dreamcast..the logitech steering wheel is awsome.. !. ;D

Ok, now that dreamcasts are being sold on ebay for 20 - 30 bucks.  I started thinking about adding one to my cabinet for real.

but the quests...

1) How many of the neomi games where ported?  Most?  How are the ports?

Lots of Naomi ports (lots of import versions)...more than you can shake a stick at.

2)  Has anyone successfully hacked an analog controller yet?  I'm not sure if I can go for their steering wheels on a cabinet...
Yes, you can hack to a normal 8-way, but there aren't many games that require only analog.
3)  How many games require/need an analog joystick for games?
Not many...mostly sports games (ones you probably wouldn't play in a cabinet anyway), outside of that, only Jet Grind Radio.
4)  Can you do a button out that will work well for most games?  (ie, is there any button layouts that work well where all buttons are accessable by only one hand).
I use the following layout (works great for all DC and MAME games I've ever played).  Start with a six button cluster, standard spacing, then two more buttons off the left going down in an arc (for thumb and index finger).   I usually only use those 4 buttons, and switch to the others per game (like SF for 6 buttons. PM me if you want a picture.
5)  Hate to say it... but I'm a little worried about access to software since they aren't producing any.  Anyone having trouble getting cds for them?  How about cdrs?
Every US dc game ever released is on ebay.  Still lots left in Gamestop/Software Inc/EB.  All dirt cheap.

I'd have to partially disagree here, about half the games need analog.

If it was an arcade port, then you won't need an analog stick (unless the arcade had an analog input, of course ;P ).  Example: Soul Calibur doesn't need an analog.

However,
If it was a platfrom game, you problaby will need analog.  Sonic Adventures 1 & 2, Ecco the Dolphin, & Toy Commander, for example, need the analog stick.
If it was a sports games, 50-50 you need analog.  Sega Sports NHL and NFL need analog, while Virtua Tennis does not.
All driving games should need an analog input (the steering wheel).

So it really depends which games you want to play.

Quick rule of thumb: if the game has the "Arcade Stick" compatable icon, no need for analog; if it doesn't have that icon, either you need analog or it should have that icon.

Well world series baseball requires you to use analog and its no arcade port.MOST arcade ports DONT need any analog.Games like marvel vs capcom 2,capcom vs snk 2,mars martix, power stone and others wont force you to use analog anyways. :P

WOW! Dreamcast... I can say I love my Dreamcasts as I love my MAME cab. I have collected 10 VMUs, 7 controllers, 4 Dreamcasts and 100 and some-odd games. They make a PS/2 port thing to plug a keyboard of your choice into your Dreamcast, could I just plug my IPac into that? That should work. It would be sooo cool! I also have found some VERY rare games! I have this wonderful game called REZ, I have Ikaruga, I have Tokyo Bus Guide, and probably the wierdest I have JetSet Radio ( that is right, Set not grind! it is the same game, but the it is the  PAL version and it had a different name.) If anyone is interested in buying well... just about any Dreamcast game (I have most of them) just send me an E-Mail.

You looking to sell 1?

I asked the same question re: ipac and dreamcase ps/2 adapter... relevant thread here  it doesn't seem like the best way to go... (hacking a controller seems to be the most straighforward way to go)

good luck!

for the record some games like tony hawk and their ilk (matt hoffman, and that style) work with either analog or digital controls, i play tony hawk in my cab and it is one of my favs, it takes a lil getting used to, using the stick instead of the directional pad, but after a few minutes, its just as fun 8)

Well, if you don't have a VGA monitor and want to go on the cheap, then TV with S-Video.  Otherwise why not go VGA??

DC VGA looks wicked nice and the adapter is definately worth picking up. To be fair though, I'd like to say:

Most rendered stuff looks really really good. Ikaruga, Virtua Tenis, etc look incredible. However 2d sprite stuff tends to stands out as sprite-y. Most likely they were just included at lower resolutions, but with games such as MvC2 or CvS2 the backgrounds look great and the characters look pixel-y.

Also, some games won't work with the adapter. The only game I've had not work is KOF EVO, it flat out tells you it's not compatible with the attached video adapter. Oh, and some boot discs don't like booting up with them, though this may be fixed.

The part you snipped was the part that was disagreeing.  You left in the part that was agreeing.  That's why I said "partially disagree".  I agree that most arcade port don't need analog, look at your quote.

Sorry I wasn't very clear that I was starting with the agree part (re-reading my post, it wasn't straight forward).  I'll reword the post.

You're right.  It's just that I can't play with the digital pad.  Now that you reminded me, my brother can't play with the analog stick, opposite of me.   Sorry for the mis-info.  I corrected my post.

The trouble with the Eygo monitor will be this... It will be in my cocktail table!

I was considering taking my standup and making it 100% dreamcast and get a new tv.

So, do I hack it into my cocktail table or it's own standalone standup will be the question.

But I guess I will have to get it and see.... but I just bought a 720 controller on ebay and I dont' think my wife will let me buy anthing else for a bit... sigh

Re:Dreamcast question

The trouble with the Eygo monitor will be this... It will be in my cocktail table!

I was considering taking my standup and making it 100% dreamcast and get a new tv.

So, do I hack it into my cocktail table or it's own standalone standup will be the question.

But I guess I will have to get it and see.... but I just bought a 720 controller on ebay and I dont' think my wife will let me buy anthing else for a bit... sigh
Personally, I'd go with the standup.  But there is no reason why you can't make it work in both using standard connectors to isolate the control panel/monitor/sound.  So you have your choice of mame or dc in whichever cabinet you prefer that day/week/month.
