Hola,

I've finally finished my compiliation of over 100 fighting game moves into one document. I received my proof copy in the mail yesterday and it looks fine.

Jump over to lulu and search for Erik Dewey (or click on the link) to see a preview. The book is available either as a printed 6x9 book or an 8.5 x 11 PDF.

I'm excited that this finally came to fruition. Thanks for all the comments and support.

Are there any samples of pages from the book?   

Did you use art for the directional arrows or just  <, >, HP + HK and stuff?

Is it in color?

I'm curious to know if it something I could grab on www.GameFaq.com or is it something I would like to have next to my arcade cabinet?

Does it have the odd glitch moves like Street Fighter II Guile's "game shut off" or "Invisible throw"?

It is just text, no pictures (too many copyright issues to use pictures and also it would increase the page count). It only has the special moves, no combos, cheats, tricks, or tips.

The idea is that you have it near your cabinet and flip to the moves before a round. To that end, each game listed uses the same control scheme and everything is in alphabetical order, allowing you to search very quickly. I played a game of Darkstalkers, then jumped to Marvel Super Heroes, and finished off with a little Mortal Kombat 3. In every case, I was open to the page I needed before MAME was done launching the game.

You could get much of the same information from GameFaqs, but converting the information to an easy to glance at format for more than a handful of games is a lot of work.

It won't be for everyone but I know I've found it useful and hopefully others will as well.

Let me know what other questions/comments you have.

I really think that you should have gone with arrows, though. U, BU, B, DB, D, FD, F, FU is a little confusing. It is much easier to tell what to do with your joysticks if you use arrows. I know that you could only do the correct arrows for 1 direction, but I think that you could figure that out easily. Anyway, if you ever do a revision with arrow, I will be in.  :cheers:

I have to agree.  There's plenty of graphics available for the joystick motions. 

One thing I've never liked about the limitations of .txt-based faqs for fighting games is having to read through the directionality segments of a move.  Of course, some people thought switching to a numberpad-based system would be better, but it's just more of the same.

I'm not knocking you.  I'm just picky.

Hmmmm... For some reason I can't get that to format correctly but if you cut and past that into a text program and change the font to "wingdings" those are arrows.

I actually went back and forth on the arrow thing. The reason I went with the text descriptions was that I found in long strings of movements the arrows took me a little more time to comprehend than the letter codes, especially if Right became Left due to me reversing positions.

Still, I did struggle a little with the decision.

This is a very good point. Arrows are only correct for characters facing right. We can assume this from the beginning, but what about player 2? Say it's your cab and you're player 1, and player 2 is looking at the book. All the arrows will be backwards. I can see the reason for the design choice. What I would have done is made the book with electronic paper that changes based on what directon your character is facing. Although that probably would have increased your cost by a tad.  ;D

As far as directionality, with any FAQ or strategy guide, what do we always end up reading before we actually get to the moves?  "The moves listed here are written assuming your character is facing right.  For 2nd player, reverse motions."   ;D

Rather than an arrow for the individual directions, you could use bent arrows that represent the motions, reducing the number of arrows needed.  Granted, it would be time consuming, but easier to read on the fly.

Example - Terry Bogard's Power Geyser from Fatal Fury Special:

1/4 circle arrow from back to down, half circle from back to front, button designation(s).

3-4 symbols, rather than a dozen.

I may download a copy to have handy though.  It's clean and simple.
