X-Arcade controls causing confusion ??
« on: June 20, 2006, 04:19:21 am »
I have an X-ARcade PCB for the controls of my cab. Some of the labels on the wires (which wires go where on the PCB) are intact, others are gone/ missing. I have one center button for "inserting credits" (in between the P1 and P2 buttons).

When I use the notepad to see what default button the Credit button is assigned to; it is "C". when I reassign a button in MAME to this button, it reads as "5" and not "C"

At the top left of the panel I have placed an ESCAPE button, to get out of games and back to mamewah as well as exiting entirely. However, in the NOTEPAD this button is assigned to "C" which obviously creates a conflict situation?

How can I solve this problem?

You answered half your questions -

You need to get a program like GhostKey or KeyScan that can show the Alt and Ctrl keys as well as the keys Notepad will show.  See http://arcadecontrols.com/arcade_downloads.shtml#Utilities

Then you need to map out what each input is actually doing.

Then you may need to re-wire your panel.

(Unless I read incorrectly and you know what the X-Arcade is supposed to be sending, but that is not what you are seeing).  In that case, you need to troubleshoot your wiring.)

My x-arcade pcb has the option to set custom mappings. You click a button, then assign a key to it. I set mine up this way instead of using their lables.

I could do that as well. Only concern I have: Do you have to load the settings each and every time you fire up (using the special Mode load key??)? Or do you configure these once and let the switch locked in its position so that the controls remain the way you programmed them to be?

Thanks to you both!

Your "remapping" settings are saved and will always be used until you load up a new memory bank or remapp the current bank settings!

X-Arcade has their own test utility that works well for me.
http://www.x-arcade.com/service/joy-support.shtml#TEST
(will not show extra buttons, but will display what they map to I believe)

And if you are using the 4 "modes" for other emulators and such, be sure to go back to the default "mode 1" before shutting your machine down.
They tend to go wonky if you leave it in mode 2-4 and shutdown then restart.

Experivement with your NUMLOCK key on or off.
I've had issues with that as well.
