Betson PS/2 Trackball issues in MAME32
« on: June 01, 2006, 03:59:34 pm »
I am having issues with my trackball. The problem is when it "free-spins" the directions get mixed up. For example in the game Mini Golf I'll hit the trackball to the left and the ball will go to the right. This only happens if I have a hard shot and the trackball "free-spins." If it's a soft shot and the trackball doesn't "free-spin" the ball goes in the correct direction. I have tried adjusting the analog control sensitivity and it does help, but to the point that the ball doesn't roll far enough even with a hard shot. Other games like Centipede work fine since the trackball doesn't need to spin during the game. In Windows if I spin the trackball up it will go straight up until it gets to the top of the screen and then start to move to the left on it's own. Is this a driver problem, a settings problem or is the trackball broken? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

My setup is as follows...

Computer - Pent IV 2.6 Windows XP home sp2
MAME32 .104
Trackball - Betson Imperial PS/2 with USB adapter

So when you spin it really fast, you get some overspin and the computer detects it's travelling in the wrong direction? Have you adjusted the sensitivity in the game?

In fact, adjust the spin in both windows and the game.

I have adjusted the analog control sensitivity and it doesn't seem to work. I seem to be having an overspin problem as you say. Is overspin something that can be fixed? I have read a lot of posts in this regard to Golden Tee. I didn't see if the problem could be fixed however.

I don't seem to have the ability to adjust the setting in Windows since the driver is recognized as a Human Interface Device. I tried to install the MS intellimouse drivers as one post said, but Windows said that the device wasn't properly recognized. It sounds like if I could adjust the device in windows that could fix my problem.

I think what will help you is the terms you need to search for. It's more commonly called Backspin. There are some suggestions on how to fix it here:

Good luck! if you don't find it there - do a search on backspin and let us know what you did to fix it.

I'd almost lay money on the probability that it is the PS/2 to USB adapter that is responsible for your woes.  While it might do the conversions fast enough for normal mouse use, the rapid spinning of a trackball may be too much for it to handle.

Try using it in the native PS/2 mode and see if the problem goes away.

Try going to mouse properties and decreasing the "pointer speed" and unchecking the "exhance pointer precision" options.

Mind that is might have zero effect in mame, depending on the mouse driver, number mice connected, and other stuff.

Edit: And what Randy said.
