Instead of making a second cab to replace my current cab, I went a different route.  I plan on making a bartop, kid sized cab, table cab, and possibly a jukebox eventually.  I've definately been bitten by the retro bug.

i've built 4 so far-
mostly because i learn so much and end up doing things better
the next time around. I also have a bunch of used crts and pc's
so it doesn't cost that much.

i like woodworking which also may explain things.

Yeah, It's a slippery slope.  I've got:

   5 Mame Cabinets
   5 Pinballs
2 Video Games (Viper & Assault)
1 Playstation "stand" w/ metal dance pad, light guns & an eye-toy
   No more room.
   No more money.

3 cabs here... but 1 for each style of game play.

A dedicated 4 way cabinet with a vertical monitor
A driver cabinet with steering wheel, shifter and gas/brake
A dual 8 way cabinet for fighters and a trackball

"Maybe Ive been bitten buy the retro bug now....could be all downhill from here...lol"

You have crossed over to the darkside, and believe me there is no turning back. >:D >:D >:D  you will always think about what could be done different or you will hear about something new. You might try to fight the urge to build another one but you will come to realise that it is a losing battle as you will find youself ass deep in arcade parts with a saw in your hand wandering why you cant stop.  :dizzy: :dizzy:

I have built two cabs. The first was crap do to my lack of skills, cash and knowledge at the time. The second turned out great. When i scrape up enough cash I will be building # 3 which will be a vertical cab.

You can tell yourself that your done but....... The game is never over !  :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2:

Have fun with it :D

Mine is pretty flexible so I find it suits my purposes for most games, HOWEVER...    :)

I wish I had chosen a better initial cablinet like the early Atari cabs or Williams.  I like the look much better.  If I were to build another cab it would either be a Galaga style with the almost parallel to the floor monitor or a sit down.   Got no room though.  Anyone wanna buy a broken down Black Knight 2000 to help me make some room?    ;)

I've got two MAME cabs, restored Donkey Kong upright, restored Pacman cocktail, Radiant Silvergun Conversion, Dreamcast cab (Dynamo), and Xbox racer (Pole Position II cockpit cab).  I also built a minipacman with 3 hacked Jakks games, and I'm working on putting an Arkanoid in a Dynamo cab.  I've also got a complete Warlords Cocktail that isn't working that I need to figure out.

I like doing different things.  I'm going to go back and make a modular CP like Doc's Modular Mame for one of my MAME cabs.  Also, restoring original cabinets helps you learn a lot about arcade cabinets in general.

If you weren't in some imaginary state like NH I would bite....

Mame cabinets breed the desire to go to auctions which leads to buying dedicated cabinets which leads to a want for pinball machines... which leads to the dark side.

I have in the game room:

  2 mame cabs - 1 mini, 1 large?
  280zzzap (B/W bally driving goodness)
  Moon Cresta clone (Starfighter cabaret)
Neo Geo 19" (Jammatized- msc boards to play with)
Class of 1812 - pinball (Keeper)
Jurassic Park - pinball (FOR SALE)

On deck:

  Cabaret Turbo (project-frozen screen)
Cabaret Rally-X (project-mame horizontal cab to replace the large? one)
  Bubbles upright (project-MultiWilliams)
Tank Battalion upright (project-vert classics mame)
Star Castle (project-vector goodness) coming soon :)
A funky little 10-game bartop that pinballjim gave me. Haven't even turned it on since bringing it home.

it's depressing when I list them out... lotsa fun though!

It all started with one mini mame cabinet. Even bought this last house with a pressing need for a game room.

I say RUN!! AS FAST AS YOU CAN!!! RUN AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!

I rebuild my cab a ton of times...

but I went with hot swappable control panels... So my one cab has a dedicated defender control panel, 2player 8ways fighter, classic (4 way, asteroid buttons, then a qbert 4way), a tron control panel (with a few extra buttons for spinner games,  A trackball control panel, a 49way control panel (with buttons for consoles... but don't like it all that much)...  And a starwars light (hydra controller)...

I also have the parts and plans for a ton more parts and plans for 3 person driving cab... but might stick with two for space...  ahh the list goes on.

And I have a dreamcast cabinet.  This one was nice and used it all the time for 5 months... and I haven't turned it on in ages.   Might get rid of it and use the parts for a cocktail table...

I just finished my first - but I'm already going down the same route as leapinlew... a dedicated  4way, with a vertical monitor, and driving cab, and then I've already got a 8-way, but it may need to be "updated"....
yeah, that's right.

I am almost done with my cab, and I don't really see why I would build another.  It was fun and it is nice, but I think I will go with the real thing from here on out.

I just don't picture mameing another cab.

For some people it's a space issue. To go with "the real thing" I presume you mean the actual video games? I have room for 3 games. For me, to maximize gameplay with the space I have - mame is the answer. I enjoy so many games that it would take a huge frankenpanel and a rotatable monitor to play all the trackball, 4 way, 8 way, dual 8 way, driving and spinner games I like.

I finished my first cab a few months ago. If I can ever talk my wife into letting me build another, it will probably be a cocktail.

My next project though is refinishing a 23' shuffleboard table that I am "acquiring" today. Pics should be in Project Announcements tomorrow.

I'm still working on my 1st. I probably won't build a second unless we move into a bigger house. Even then, it depends on the Time * $ equation.

If I do end up going down that path, my dream would be to make a cocktail/vertical and something dedicated, like a Williams box with Defender controls.

Im finshing up number one right now and im working on a case mod for my PC but when I get some more funds im going to ether upgrade the MAME PC or start a new project so I can play fighters with 2 players or a trackball cabinet.  I think having more than one cabinet is better but more expencive because those all in one pannel look horable in most cases.  I wouldnt ever do a all in one CP it just takes the arcae feel from it.  Swapable pannels I guess are ok and im thinking about modifing my current nearly finshed cabinet to make it swapable.

Going to have 3 by the time I'm done... Right now I have a horizontal complete, a vertical about 75% done, and the final one will be a horizontal bartop. I have basically everything I need for that one except the keyboard encoder.

I'd actually probably do a lot more, but I have a young kid and I'm really stretched for time. I'd love to have a dedicated golf cabinet, as well as one for driving games.

This hobby can definitely get out of control in a hurry.  :dizzy:

The question I would ask is how many of you have been roped into helping friends build cabs.  I have only build two for myself but have been in on at least the wiring of 5 more.

Funny thing is right now I am without a cab due to several moves so I will probably be building at least one more.

I started with one vertical vantage cabinet, and since switched that to Mame and all vertical 4 and 8 way. now since that first simple start i am looking at the driveway and my vehicles are both not in the garage, if that gives you an idea. Originally told the wife will always be able to get vehicles in garage. wow how much that has changed...
1 Vertical Mame cabinet 4 and 8 way tstick plus (my favorite type games)
1 horizontal mame cabinet 25" dynamo w/orig. monitor (was a double axle)
1 GoldenTee conversion project underway - will be my jukebox, mame, nes, snes, genesis, karaoke beast.
1 dedicated street figther 2
1 donkey kong dedicated (being restored)
1 full court frenzy
1 United Omni shuffle bowler.
after the GoldenTee conversion is complete the double axle conversion will be converted back to original control state with steering wheel and shifter for a dedicate driving mame cabinet (cant wait for that)
This is one awesome hobby!!

Almost complete the first upright cabinet (two years in the making) and I am already thinking about a cocktail version.  :)

my 2nd and 3rd cab. both unfinished. waiting for parts.

Right on!

Dougman is the only other person I know whose also made his MAME cabs out of KIS cabinets! (although it looks like your horiz is missing it's bottom piece of wood)

for MAME, I have the same layout as Dougman, two KIS cabs, one horiz, one vert:

Arcade, two. One Namco Classics Collection Vol. 1 made from a very beat-to-hell Frogger cab:

and one Red Earth, made from another KIS cabinet:

So all in all, I've got four, but room for zero.
