Opti-Pac difficulties...
« on: May 31, 2006, 12:18:19 am »
Hello!

Before I even go into detail, I did do some searching and couldn't find anything to address my issue!  :)

So...I've got everything workin' on 'THE CONTROL PANEL OF DOOM!' My IPAC-4 is functional and working well. I'm receiving input and proper response from both trackballs and spinners from the Windows 2k GUI. However, when I enter MAME or MAME32 I am unable to address the additional 'mouse' options that will supposedly allow me to utilize both trackballs in games like 'Marble Madness'.

I'm certain that there's some silly thing I'm missing here but I can't figure it out.

For what it's worth, here's a general list of things I've looked at/tried:

Jumpers on the Opti-Pac - set to USB and P1 & 2.

Cabling - checked to be safe but all devices respond normally, (even though they all respond as one device), in operating system GUI.

USB Devices - Uninstalled and reinstalled USB devices pertaining to the Opti-Pac several times.

My understanding is that as of MAME v105 this should all be built into the mame exe...right?

Anyway, sorry for the babbling and thanks in advance for any help.

[On a side note, thanks for all the help both direct and indirect that came from the folks on these boards...without the perpetual presence of the helpful and witty folks here, I'd still be standing around my garage staring blankly at a bunch of plywood with a rusty handsaw dangling from my hand... ;) ]

Have you mapped trackball inputs to MAME inputs?  Run a game, hit Tab and go to Input (general).

Andy,

Sending you an e-mail as soon as I finish responding to this thread.  Didn't want to bother you until I asked around here and/or unless I got the go ahead from ya' first.  :)

HooPZ,

Yep.  I did map the inputs but, regardless of how I configure things, I only get the single 'Mouse X' or 'Mouse Y' selections for track analog inputs...

Thanks for the help so far!  :)

And does your mame.ini file have "Mouse 1" in it?

HooPZ,

Do you mean do I have the mouse value set to 1 in 'mame.ini' or am I missing/should I create a 'Mouse 1' entry?

If it's the first, (do I have the value set to 1?), then yes.  :)

If it's the second, then I don't believe I do have that entry.  Perhaps you could point out an example....?

:)

Thanks!

I meant the first.  Sorry about not being more clear.

And I am all out of ideas.  Sorry!   :banghead:

Andy is top-notch so he should be able to get this working for you.   :)

HooPZ,

I sincerely appreciate the effort!  :)  This is the part of the process that I'm a lot more familiar with, (electronics, computers, etc), but there's obviously some stuff that I just haven't done or worked with before...such as the Opti-Pac!  :)

The only thing that's keepin' me from attaching this behemoth I call 'THE CONTROL PANEL OF DOOM' to my cabinet and FINALLY being done is this dual trackball/dual spinner issue.

I'm hopin' I can figure it out over the course of the day as this is the one day a week where I have my evenings to myself and I'm not obligated in some way.  :)

To anyone who is reading this...

It just occurred to me that it might be worthwhile to find out what method/mame build folks are using for dual trackball/dual spinner, (if any), setups.

This would be a situation where you're using an Opti-Pac, of course.

Anyone?

"Bueller?  Bueller?"

Right!  What you said!

I figured it out, by the way.  I should have been searching for 'dual mice'.  Turns out that my test box, which is Windows 2k, won't do the 'dual mice' thing.

Gotta' be Windows 98 or Windows XP.

Geez...wasted a bunch o' time on that.  Oh well.  Lesson learned.

So, it's done.  It's a behemoth.  Monstrous.  No idea where I'm gonna' put this thing now.  :)  It's four player, two trackball, two spinner goodness though...so it'll be smoooooooth no matter where I put it.

However, I suspect that the wife may not see it that way.  ;)

When I have the chance and have access to a functional digital camera again, I'll take some pics to torture you all with.

Now I've gotta' figure out some sideart and control panel art...

MUHAHAHA!

You know what, I wrote those and yet I still laugh every time I read:

'Clumsy Woman!'

:)

It's a pleasure to be simple minded...most of the time.  :)

Yeah, I don't know exactly how I'd go about generating art that would properly illustrate 'Curdled Milk Lad!' either.

Not that I wouldn't try...but I don't have any illustration/artistic skills of that sort.  ;)
