Video Game Collector Magazine
« on: May 28, 2006, 12:30:08 am »
Did a search of the forums and did not come up with a hit for this magazine I picked up from my local game store (Rhino Games).  If its been posted here before then I'm sorry.  Here's a link to their webpage:

http://www.vgcollector.com/index.htm

It was shrinked wraped so I was a little hesitant to buy it site unseen but I'm glad I did.  It primarily deals with console games and systems.  The latest issue (Spring - published quarterly) is 56 pages in length, full color and coated as any major run magazine.

The latest issue was set up with the following sections: news and notes, collector's spotlight, system showdown, old school, Twin Galaxies Scoreboard (this month highlighing Intellivision games), Proto Patrol, Made in Japan, Nintendo e-reader, Confessions of the Game Doctor, Intellivision spotlight with a complete photochecklist of every game's original box art, Dragon's Lair Interview, Dragon's Lair 2 - The Lost Scene (story board format), reviews, working designs, market watch, price guide intro, and a complete game system checklists from Atari 2600 through X-Box.

Overall I think its a pretty good magazine for those of us who like to read about and collect video games.  If you are able to pick one up go for it.  I'm not affiliated with the people who make this so I'm not trying to push this.  I just love to get my hands on everything that I can dealing with this hobby and I particully like magazines for those times that I'm away from the computer (i.e. toliet, at my job when I'm suppose to be working, etc.).  I'm still upset at the demise of Retro Gamer last year.  I know its up and running again with a new publisher but its currently not being sold here in the states and I'm hesitant to drop $100 plus to gat a subscription.  I will be definitly getting a subscription to this magazine though.  Additionally, I'm really impressed with the direction that Kevin is taking GameRoom Magazine.  I recommend that one also if you haven't got it yet.

I have been picking up Retro Gamer at Barnes & Noble for a bit now. Expect to pay $12+ for it tho. Damned expensive for a mag. Thanks for the link to VGC. I'll definately be getting a subscripition!

Thanks for the heads up on Barnes and Noble.  I'll have to go check them out again.  The last time I looked they didn't have it and the local Books-A-Million told me they could not get it.

I've read most of the "Video Game Collector" magazine that I purchased last night and I think its a pretty good.  As I mentioned it seems to be console focused but I like the retro angle to it.  Good topics and interviews.

Here is another one that I just got the back issues of (issue 0 & 1, still available) #2 coming soon:

http://www.retrofusion.co.uk/

They just arrived in the mail yesterday, about a week after I ordered them. The price is a little cheaper, but they aren't as "thick" as R.G. either. They seem to be pretty nice, kinda the same set-up as R.G. And they look to be just starting out so now is a nice time to get in on the beginning as it were.

My B&N also had the R.G. Anthology #2 on sale as well.  Needless to say I spent some $$ that day.

Thanks for the link.  I'll go ahead and give that magazine a try.  Your right about getting ahold of the first issue while you can, I have yet to get the first two issues of Retro Gamer  :banghead:

I wish that the publishers here in the U.S. treated the retro scene along the same line that the British seem to do.  I realize that the audience for this hobby is only so large but I just don't understand it when I go to the big chain bookstores and can find a magazine on just about any obscure topic except the retro gamer / arcade scene.  That's one reason why I posted the original message as I was surprised / happy to find an American published magazine focusing on the older games (and a pretty decent one at that).  If anyone out there knows of any other magazines by all means post them on here.

Also, GameRoom magazine's issues since Kevin took over have been pretty good.

Not sure if its sold at BN.  Got mine at Rhino Games (sorta like EB Games with a much better retro collection to go along with the newest releases).
