SOLD: Bally Vector Pinball [US-TX-Austin] - $500
« on: May 21, 2006, 01:57:00 am »
I have a Bally Vector I just purchased 3 days ago.

Has a switch  issue where the "Y" in HYPE cause it to tilt.  Also Player 4
display is garbled.  Outside that, it is a nice playing machine.

Here are some photos:

http://www.pbase.com/jripley/vector

I don't know how to grade it's condition, so please refer to the pics and I
can answer any questions you have.

I am looking to get $500 for it, exactly what I paid.  Also would consider
comparable trades of arcade and/or pinball machines.

Local buyers to central texas only please.  I wouldn't know where to begin
to ship this thing.

Thanks,
John

That's a decent deal... issues are probably minor, though displays are getting hard to find if the issue is the display.  That playfield looks a LOT like Black Knight which is a far more expensive game.

It is likely something minor.  Either a bad cap or diode somewhere wreaking havoc on the switch matrix or a bad PIA chip which can be had for $5.00 on ebay.  I don't have the time or inclination to fix a game I'd likely sell anyways so I'll flip it for what I paid.

I played a game all the way through last night (it gets "fixed" when warmed up) without issue.

Tell your wife that some other guy was trying to sell the same machine a few years ago for $900, and this is an incredible deal.

=)

LOL!...probably won't work....I got my pro-vision 27" monitor using that logic..."Baby...it usually cost $480...It is on sale for $349...I'm saving us $130!"
She fell for it once...I won't push it twice...LOL!

I just ordered 2 new PIA chips that should be in next week.  I swapped the PIAs on the MPU and it gave me different symptoms so I'm betting one (or both) are bad.

If the new PIA fixes it, the price wil go up at least $15, the price of the PIAs and maybe more  ;)

I just replaced the PIAs and the game plays 100%.   Now it is just the "Player 4" display that needs work.  It hasn't out-gassed by the looks of it (the last 2 pics are of the display).

Your player four display is bad. You can get an LED replacement for about $30.00.  The problem with that idea is that the LED display is very bright compared to the old gas displays.  So to make it look good you will end up buying four of them to make the game look right and selling you gas display

All pinballs are valued by playwear, overall condition, and particular game following.  Playwear is the physical wear on the playfield.  As for shipping locate Forward Air and call them for an estimate.  Once you take the backglass out the door with the displays will swing open and you will see four bolts holding to the larger box.  After carefully removing each of the connectors from the boards the wiring from the wire ties all of the wiring should fall thru the hole into the big box (body).  Prop the game on a box so that all of the legs are off of the ground and remove the legs. Sit the body on the ground so that the plunger and coin door are up. Acquire a pallet.  Wrap the small box (head) with the backglass in place so that the backglass is toward the playfield with some padding at the contact points.  Wrap legs together place them on the head and shrink wrap.  If you don

Thanks for your help.

I'm pretty sure it is the driver board,  likely the BCD to 7seg IC.  During boot up, there is garbage on the display but it is bright and solid.  It doesn't seem like it has outgassed.  Once the MPU completes booting, and I believe begins sending the BCD signal to the displays, that is when it starts strobing crap.  I am just guessing mind you  :-\

I think I'll try and replace the IC.  A local collector has one for me.  Unfortunately, unlike the PIAs, this one is not socketed, so my PCB solderings skill may be tested.  I will install a socket to while I'm at it.

Diagnosing and repair this has been quite rewarding, now I'd almost hate to sell it.
