Amiga Commodore best game list for cabinets
« on: May 20, 2006, 04:49:41 pm »
Does anyone know of a list which recommends which Amiga Commodore games are good to be played on a cabinet?   A lot of them require a full keyboard to play and I am not interested in these type games .....

I'd say anything made by Psygnosis is probably an excellent candidate.

Battle Squadren - kick --I'm attempting to get by the auto-censor and should be beaten after I re-read the rules--  ,2 player simultainious , vertical shooter.   Was released on genesis years later, but didnt compare to the amigas graphics, sounds, and more.

My favorite: Rainbow Islands.  Also Pirates!, Cannon Fodder, Lemmings, Worms, Prince of Persia might be good candiates.  I'm putting together a group of Atari ST choices right now, and there my be overlap between the two platforms.  If I find any I'll add them to the list.

My favorite "68000" arcade-style game is Nebulus. I played it on the ST only, but I think there's also an Amiga conversion.

Not that I've played alot of Amiga games but depending on how many buttons & joys you have on your CP couldn't you play darned near anything using that cool little joy-to-key app.?

Most Amiga games require an 8-way joystick with 1 firebutton (it only supported 1 firebutton on the joystick if I recall). A few used a few extra keys - normally just 1 or 2 max, so you could remap these. A few games used a mouse.

Heres a lis of really, really good Amiga games. Not tried all these on a Cab, but most should be very playable. I've avoided games that were arcade ports (as its for a cab!) although there are some great conversions for the Amiga (NewZealand Story/Rainbow Islands). I've also avoided 3D games (with the exception of Cinemaware's Wings, and Stunt Car Racer) as they tend to date quite badly from the Amiga. And I've left out strategy/role playing games as figured they are less suited to cab games....(though if you want, look at the sublime Secret of Monkey Island/Monkey Island 2).

I imagine 2 player IK+ would be rather good on cab. Especially in 'Turbo' mode...

IK+
Speedball
Speedball2
Xenon2
ProjectX
Battle Sqaudron
Gods
Turrican
Turrican2
Sensible Soccer / Kick Off / Kick Off 2
Canon Fodder
Alien Breed
Alien Breed2
Stunt Car Racer
Another World
Flashback
Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge
Rick Dangerous 1/2
SWIV
Worms
Chaos Engine 1/2
Defender of the Crown
Rocket Ranger
It Came from the Desert
Wings
Blood Money
Shadow of the Beast (Included for technically awesome sound/video, but its extremely hard and therefore gets annoying)

IMOP most Amiga games were either too hard,  or just plain horrid.   IE shadow of the beast looked great... but seemed impossible to me.   Out Run on the amiga was a train wreck. I didnt have that many games..  but just going from what I saw, I wasnt very impressed with most games.

Check out the  X68000 emulator  :)   The thing has near perfect arcade ports.   I even found Thunderforce II on it!  Which was ported to the sega genesis... but, the x68000 version has more parallax scrolling layers, more levels, better sound and gfx.  Quite  kick --I'm attempting to get by the auto-censor and should be beaten after I re-read the rules--.

Its a little tricky to set up (its all in japanese).. but I had found a site out there that showed you pics of what to select to get it to go.

Yeah I am finding that tons of Amiga stuff are not cabinet worthy ..... I can not get some of the games mentioned here to even work .....   anyway, there a about 40 games so far which will work.   I am slowly making my way through all games to see what they look like and what is involved.   I am making this determination very quickly as there are way too many games to process.   If the game does not load into a "game" mode, then it is not going to be used.   I am aslo not using any adventure types games, or any games requiring a whole story background in order to play.  Basically, any games I find which can use the CTRL key to Fire and the arrow keys to move around will be accepted as long as the game is not completely dumb ......

I went through all 291 games starting with "A" and only 19 games were accepted.

I personally can not stand how most every game has a "cracked by" signature with scrolling text, flashing lights and music ...... kind of annoying ... oh well.    It is just that I spent about 3 weeks understanding WinUAE, gathering information, configuring and when I finally played some of these games I was quite disappointed ..... oh well ... live and learn.

Welcome to the wonderful work of emulation, on the bleading edge, where most of your time is spent figuring things out.

Yeah, I kind of figured this might be a pain ....... this is why I left the Amiga games as the last set tof games to be configured in the front end.

Ouch - yes I agree there are a LOT of Amiga games which are not worthy - for anything. Amiga games still lived in the day where plucky ex-zx81 bedroom coders could get some dodgy game released. It was attractive as it had the power of 16-bit consoles, but you could write your own stuff (unlike consoles). So there is a lot of Flak. Just look at all the gigabytes "PD" collections (Public Domain).

If its easier every game I listed in my above post I played on my Amiga, which means technically they should all work on an (emulated) Amiga with 1meg ram (512K chip, 512k slow/fast), 68000, Kickstart 1.3, OCS chipset. And obviously I was (more of) a kid when I was playing those, and memories are sometimes distorted....

You got any info/links on the X68000? I remember a friend at my school had one (his dad had brought it over from the far east). He thought it was great but then he could speak japanese...

I'm going to have Sensible World of Soccer 96/97 on my upright (when I finally build it in the next few years *sigh*), as even now it's still the best football game ever. I plugged my desktop machine into my bartop to test it out under emulation, and apart from the occasional instability in the emulator, it was a blast. Two player cabinet play would be even better.

Chaos Engine 2 and Speedball 2 are a couple of excellent 2-player games that you'd need to have.

If you have a trackball, then you could even play Lemmings - two trackballs would mean that you could play 2-player Lemmings, which only the Amiga version had, from memory.

A trackball would also also Worms - the Director's Cut - sheep on a rope, anybody?

Super Cars 2 wouldn't be too bad either.

Even though it's a shareware game and the graphics weren't exactly cutting edge for the time, Extreme Violence is great fun. Hell, it's been about the only game I've ever been able been able to convince my partner to play - she's not exactly computer game-friendly (but I am allowed to do whatever I want :) ) - Extreme Violence is available here.

Super Frog and James Pond were a couple I used to play a lot of my cabinet when my Amiga was driving it (about 20 years ago)

Speedball was much fun as well.

I'll bet they don't look as good as I remember them though :)

They mightn't look as good, but providing they play as well as you remember, that's all that counts - it's not as if classic era arcade games look brilliant either ;)

Now that we got the wiki, why dont set up a list there of games that are suitible to play on an arcade-cab? Each game could be listed with a stick-mode(4/8), number of buttons and soforth.

These may have already been mentioned but here goes.

99.99999% of action games for the Amiga used a simple 8-way with one fire button.  However, they are all horizontal (that I know of) so a vertical cab wouldn't look right...even for vertical shooters.  However, for good games, Shadow of the Beast I & II are awesome.  Hard as hell but awesome.  Lemings would be great for a trackball.

One of the best places to look is  http://lemonamiga.com

They have tons of reviews.

Silvers List is pretty dang good...

Gods- One of the very Best
Turrican- Also a great game for its day

Most of the Bitmap Brothers games where greeat fun, (listed also Chaos engine, Speedball, Superfrog, etcc...)

FIRE AN ICE Side scroller
HARLAQUIN Side Scroller
LEANDER Side Scroller beat um up

As cool as some Amiga games are, I think that the big thing to remember is that there are many good arcade shoot-em-ups, beat-em-ups and so on - the real trick is to select the games that the Amiga had that are unique and weren't matched in the arcade.

For my money it's games like:
- Sensible World of Soccer 96/97;
- Speedball 2;
- Lemmings (even if there was an arcade prototype);
- The Chaos Engine 2; and
- Cannon Fodder.

Hell, I don't even recall an arcade golf game quite like Sensible Golf. Stunt Car Racer is another one (although it's a shame it wouldn't work with analogue controllers).

To a certain degree I'm repeating myself, but that's the key to it all - not replicating what original arcade games do very well.

Anyone remember starglider (or maybe speeld star glider.)??? I can't recall who produced it, but it was a pretty good 3D first person flying and shooting game. It has literally been over 16 years since I played it, so i could just be making it all up in my mind.. .

I couldn't ever really get into it, but others raved about it. No idea how well it has aged though. Having said this, it wasn't really an arcade-style game, so I don't know how well it would suit a cabinet. Anyway, I think that it used a mouse, so it would need a trackball.
