DK2 possible purchase!
« on: May 19, 2006, 11:44:01 am »
Ok...I may be finally be picking up my first original arcade game a Donkey Kong 2.

I was told it's virtually mint....but it does have some cosmetic issues that I can deal with (assuming this guy's not lying to me).

He wants $400. but I think I can get him lower.

Any hoo....my question is it has a working DK2 board...but I was thinking of adding a PC and making it into a multi kong cab.

Has anyone done this?

I guess I would have to just disconnect the control panel and wire it up w/an ipac or similar; and pick up a VGA card from ultimarc for the video......

anyone done this before?....I'm sure I wouldn't be the first....just curious.

Seriously. Will it fit in my basement or what?

With all that original hardware, you should consider leaving the panel alone and just buying another molex connector, run wire from that to the i-pac. So you can swap a plug and use the panel on the original game board or the i-pac. Getting a splitter set up that does both PC & PCB without having to swap wires, theres the hard part. Something to consider anyways.

I think its a bit high... but if you love it, and its cosmetically in great shape... then its a great deal.

Its like furnature... that you can play.  And most people wouldn't think twice about paying 400 for a sofa.

I agree with you 100%.....

originally he told me it was factory showroom perfect....what a surprise?...the  more I talked to him the more "minor" cosmetic damage their was.

I plan on checking it out in person (it's not too far from me for once)....and I'm fully prepared to offer $300.-$350. and walk if I don't think it's in good shape.

UPDATE!!!!

well it turn out that one man's "mint condition" is another man's "handy man special".

...I still can't believe that this guy said his cab was "mint condition and looks practically brand new".

Well if when it rolled off of the Nintendo line they gouged the sizes....waterlogged the bottom.....adjusted the screen to show only 2/3 of the video....washed out the colors.....removed the art (on the sides)....removed most of the molding (but left on some cracked yellowed pieces....put cobwebs and mouse dropping into it for "atmosphere"...burned the control panel with cigarettes.....and oh yeah, turned off the marquee light....

...then yeah. That thing was showroom fresh.

Man, I think my wife was more pissed that I was for the 1.5 hour trip we had to make to see this hunk of junk.

He wanted $400. I offered $200. (and I thought that I was being generous because I know I could fix it up with some love).....but his wife looked at me as if I just told her to go F off.

Oh well.

I guess it was not to be!

I've been burned too, guy said a buddy of his had a mint Sea Wolf that was being kept in a storage shed. It was non working, but he said it would look decent. Nope. It was being kept in his backyard by the pool. It was wrotten awfully bad and had severe water damage from rain. I finally had to turn down something free.

The wife shoulda taken that money and ran, but she probably didn't know what a good deal you were giving her, people around my house tell me, "It works, it must be worth alot!".

I'm glad you didn't settle for that pile. There are moments where you kick yourself for missing out, and there are days you kick yourself for falling for junk.

...Ken you're only off by about 10 miles give or take!!...

and Glaine....don't get me wrong....for a brief moment I thought I should take it anyway....but it would really cost me at least 300. to 500 to really get it into mint condition.

Thankfully I was "strong enough" to pass it up.

I just contacted another dude about a "DK/DK Jr."; but he emailed me back and said he realized it wasn't an original DK cab. At least he was honest!....the cab does look pretty good though if anyone is interested....here's the link to his pics.

It looks like it may be a home built cab...that "evokes" the look of a DK machine.

He's asking $550. in the NY area---

...You should refer them to my brother-in-law. He would buy any piece of crap.
Story time:
He is a rich, cocky, piece of crap. He owns a backwoods slot machine gambling place and has a large room with nothing to do with it. He gets the bright idea to start buying arcade games since he saw that I was interested in them( he has a superiority complex: I have one, he has to have 20). Being the nice guy I am, I tell him "let me know when you go to buy anything so I  can help you out". Well he is too good to ask advice, so he buys a machine off ebay. Some unknown golf piece of crap. He paid like $400. The guy tells him that he has a whole room full of arcade games he would sell him for a lot price. Without inquiring what they are and only going on a "Yeah, they all work great!" line, he rents a U-haul and heads 2 states over. He ended up paying like $250 each for about 20 machines. He didn't even check to see if they actually worked when he picked them up! He gets back, and then has the nerve to call me a week later to see if I can fix them for him! I did go look at them finally, and boy did he get hosed! Only one machine has a working monitor (which needs rebuilt)! several of them are SEVERELY water logged. Some have obviously been broken into. Of all of them, only the crappy golf game (that uses a bat instead of a trackball) works, and even it is wired incorrectly, and has a badly screen burned monitor. In the end, I politely referred him to Randy Fromm's website and told him he better get studying. :laugh2:

So to all you fella's looking to unload a hunk of junk and you might live in close proximity to WV, I got a sucker for ya...

Heh...similar stuff used to happen w/ me, and "friends" buying PC's.

They would ask the same questions, it this a good deal, what kind of hard drive do I need, shoudl I get a DVD burner, etc...

I would always tell them, feel free to look around, but talk to me BEFORE you buy anything...nobody listens.  Both driends and family, have bought no-name crap, used PC's for way too much, and most have overpaid, for a system that is way more than what they ever need.

But...., I now change them about $150 / hour (more than I charge most customers) to fix their crap.  Now I tell them that if they don't talk with me before buying it, don't expect me to fix it.....for free... ;D

Gotta luv 'em... :banghead:

MameMaster, did you simply look at it and then make your offer or did you point out all the flaws? Really helps to itemize the problems before low-balling a delusional seller like that.

actually my wife got mad am me I didn't point out that the thing was not only NOT "mint" but it was a mess.....

....I didn't feel like getting into it w/the owner. If they "thought" it was mint, in the condition it was in,.....I knew I would not change their minds by what I had to say.

@ PCTech - I know whatcha mean, most family/friends seem to ignore everything I say cept the 2 cents they think they need to do something. I ain't flappin them gums to hear the sounds! This one friend, swear I have to repeat something 3-4 times before he gets the idea that its important and he should remember it. I HATE that.

And there is NO way family would let me charge them anything, much less $150/hour. Some "friends" even think they deserve it like I'm under waranty and say stuff like - "you mess anything up and you're in trouble". Thats a stabbing offence right there. Thats the way to get charity - keep complaining.
