Superauction San Jose, CA attending?
« on: May 18, 2006, 10:48:50 pm »
Should be in the meet up board, but I might get better response here.  Mods, feel free to move. :)

Anyone attending the auction?  I'm stressing 'cause I have no way to transport a cab so I'm thinking of getting a U-Haul.  Sad yes, but functional anyway.  I'm in Hollister, so looking for someone from Salinas, Gilroy, Hollister, Morgan Hill, etc. to share a ride and have some fun?  San Jose's good too, but if I get a U-Haul it's gonna be a lot of driving.

I went to the last auction and my ride (read: pickup truck) cancelled at the last minute so I couldn't buy anything.  Bummer, but I did get a chance to meet another member 'though it wasn't 'till after the fact that I knew it.

Would enjoy hooking up with a few others if you're attending.
Cheers!

How was the auction?

This was my second and I left empty handed.  I went looking for a Joust, but no luck.  I did bid on a working Satan's Hollow cabaret, but didn't want to pay the $175 it went for (though it did have an original working handle.)

Generally speaking, there were very few good games there, maybe a couple of lines.  It was very crowded at the beginning then all of a sudden everyone disappeared.  Stuff was going very cheap for the most part.  There were probably 50 junk cabinets, some going for $1, others for less than that.

Toward the end, junky cabarets were going 8 or 10 for a dollar.

There were a few nice games there, including a Ms. Pac that went for I think $375.  A few sit downs, and maybe 10 pinballs.  The pin prices seemd a bit high.

I was going to get a U-Haul for the day, but the cost for the U-Haul was going to be like $150.  Had I known the prices were going to be so low I would have gladly spent the money.  Heck, I could have robbed them of leaf switch joysticks and came out ahead.

I went to the last one in December and it was a bit of a dissapointment.  One of the trucks was snowed in somewhere in Denver and goodies were somewhat scarce.  This time around, I couldn't attend due to a previous arrangement I made to go fishing.  But my buddy (soldier that he is) that I normally go with went anyway.  He managed to score a Street Fighter 2 CE cab that was redone into a vertically mounted Strikers 1945 cab.  He got it home with the help of his brother's truck.  The cab worked 100%.  But once refurbed, the sticks and buttons will go.  The monitor will also need a new cap kit.  The CP sticker may be replaced.  About $100 worth of goods and a bit of effort.  We decided to turn this one into a MAME machine so I fronted the dough for an ArcadeVGA and J-PAC.  Some of these expenses will be recouped when the Strikers 1945 PCB goes to eBay and brings back about $100.  This is actually the 6th or 8th cab that we have worked on in less than a year.  So we are a veterans.  Flipping the monitor back horizontal was a snap.  The hard part will be to get MAME to work the way we want.

Needless to say, it is pretty exciting.  Especially when you consider that the cab cost a whopping $12 with fees and taxes. admisssion was $10, and about 5 bucks of gas was spent.  Can't wait for the next one!
When you find great deals on Craigslist for CRT based cabs, exuberance :laugh2: can be a bad thing!
