It was actually the first program I used, but I ended up going back to Visio and pencil and graph paper.

I think that's more a statement of my 3d rendering skills than the program though.  :)

Am I missing something? Isn't this the same SketchUp that people around here have been using for years, re-branded to Google?

No, you're not missing something.

However, this version has some kind of 3d model search ala Google Images that allows you to search for and insert user submitted 3d models into your scene.  It's nice.  And free.. I like.

Well lets see... $500 to free, I think that's a damn good deal. This software is top notch folks, give it a try! Very cool stuff indeed. Oh by the way, we had talked about this already, but Google purchased Sketchup a couple of months back.

first post here..... Great program I downloaded it last night and threw this together.  I wasn't trying to go for accurate measurement, rather just a design.  I am currently building my first cabinet, and this will really help out alot. This is my first attempt, so it might be off a little but anyway here it is.

AMAZING.

At our company, people are always asking us "how will that look on my building?"  Up until now, I had no easy way of showing them.

So good.

Thanks.

I wish I had seen this before I started my cab. It's very easy to use, and would've helped me out alot on the design stages.

i'm not sure if they come with the free version. you can download them
here along with other premade items...

http://www.sketchup.com/?sid=38

hopefully it will work with the free google version.

once again this is a great program. you'll be able to plan out
your cab and easilly modify things in 3d. its one of those programs
that i save the installer for just in case the parent company ever dissapears.

Sketchup is cool.  I have a version 4 of Sketchup that I've used and, even though I'm no good with it, the new Google database of downloadable .skp files is a definitely plus.

The downside is, that none of them work with my version of Sketchup.   So I was going to download the new free version, but it looks like there is a free Google-version, but still a 'full Pro' $500 version.  Is there any difference between the two?  Is there any functionality that the free v5 doesn't have?    I don't want to move from my 'full' version 4 to a 'free' version 5 if I'm going to lose something.

Thanks

As far as I've read, the only thing you "lose" is the ability to export the sketchup drawings to AutoCAD (or other) formats.

I tried it, and did up a model of my house, fenced yard, future shed and front yard with driveway. Great little app this is. Real easy to use. As someone who is well-versed with 3D Studio Max, I'd rather use Sketch for quick 3D. It's way faster to build something with accurate dimensions than it is to do the same thing in 3DS Max.
